It's simple math to predict the path that we're on. Although the Republicans are devoid of intellectual heft (more Palins and Bachmanns than Romneys or Ron Pauls) or appealing alternatives right now, they will be back, and probably far sooner than most pundits claim so boastfully, and with an absolute vengeance. The U.S. will never be happy being Norway or Sweden. It's just not possible given the differences in the society, from racial, ethnic, theological, cultural and philosophical vantage points. We are a diverse melting pot of people and ideas, and strangle hold government only works in dictatorships/totalitarian regimes and/or smaller nations that are quite homogeneous.
