I prefer 2 monitors. Whenever I trade on my laptop without an external monitor, I feel crippled. The resolution matters too. Get the highest resolution on both monitors that you can afford. If you had one very hi res monitor, it might almost do the work of 2 monitors. When I'm using my desktop, I have a "3rd" if you want to call it that because I use my laptop for research, news, etc.
