  1. Mav,

By "Bright", do you mean FULBRIGHT (which are awarded both to students and established scholars), or do you mean RHODES scholars? Marshall scholars, perhaps?

Sorry I didn't take the time to pen an essay defending a conference of schools that I did NOT attend professor. But then you're the expert on me so you knew that already didn't you jackass? The attitude and tone of your entire post proves my point.

Oh by the way there are other colleges in a University besides the business school and if you're as smart as you obviously think you are then you know that undergrad rankings in general are pretty pointless.

"The Princeton Review looked at institutional data concerning average GMAT scores and undergraduate GPA of enrolled students; acceptance and matriculation rates; and student/faculty ratio. The Princeton Review also asked students about the quality of their professors, their relationship with fellow students, and the realization of their academic expectations."

in this Busines ranking Florida ahead of Northwestern...
Michigan + Ohio State with 500 students in each class nowhere to be seen, try talking to you professor after class :))

  4. Jackass, huh. Real articulate.

The rankings include law schools, medical schools, and other grad programs. The SEC has a few decent academic institutions, like U of Florida. Nevertheless, bottom line, Big Ten universities in general outclass SEC universities. Your opinion does not change that fact.

I live in North Carolina, btw. Not too many "Yankees", as you say, down here.

  5. Florida is probably the class of the SEC.

We'll see in a few weeks whether they're at the top of the football class.

But in general Big Ten schools are regarded by most in the know as better. The writers of the Princeton Review are welcome to their opinion, but most would disagree (I have to say that I am biased here, as my Ph.D. is from a Big Ten school).

The best universities in this country, for that matter, are to be found in the NE, Midwest, and in California. You know, all of those "liberal" states. :)

UF Leads Public Universities In National Merit, Achievement Scholars

Filed under Research on Tuesday, January 4, 2005.GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida has moved to the top spot in public universities’ enrollment of both National Merit Scholars and National Achievement Scholars, as announced by the National Merit Corp.

Overall, UF ranks second nationally in National Merit Scholars and fourth nationally in National Achievement Scholars within its 2004-05 freshman class.

With 259 National Merit scholars recruited, UF is behind only Harvard University in recruiting more National Merit scholars in 2004. In 2003, UF recruited 224 National Merit Scholars and ranked fourth nationally; in 2002, UF recruited 186 National Merit scholars, placing it fifth among all universities and second among public universities. This year, there are 8,258 National Merit Scholars enrolled nationally at 375 institutions.

“UF’s remarkable educational and social opportunities attract some of the nation’s most talented undergraduates,” said Joseph Glover, interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “UF’s ranking as the nation’s top public university in enrolling National Merit and National Achievement Scholars is due to the rich academic environment created by an outstanding faculty, staff and student body.”

Merit Scholars are selected from more than 15,000 semifinalists nationally by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The students scored in the top one-half percent of high school seniors in their states on the Preliminary SAT-National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The top-10 ranked participating schools, followed by the number of recruited Merit scholars, are:

    1. Harvard University — 3122. University of Florida — 2593. University of Texas — 2424. Yale University — 2245. Stanford University — 2176. University of Chicago — 1987. Washington University at St. Louis — 1978. Princeton University — 1929. University of Southern California — 18310. University of Oklahoma — 170

  7. I said Florida was a "decent" institution and "the class" of the SEC. That said, the average Big Ten school is better than the average SEC school. The facts are pretty clear here.

The number of National Merit scholars is one factor. Good for Florida. But it is not by any means the most important factor. Fact is, the quality of the graduate programs and graduate faculty are probably the most important indicators.

    Why? $$$$.

Undergraduate education means very little to the big public universities and is not considered a big deal in the national reputation of a big university. A great teacher (best teacher on campus) who teaches great students but wins few grants and publishes few articles/books will get fired at any national university.

Not a very scientific poll, just more fodder for this "debate". For you unfortunate people not equiped with a Big Ten education, the results are as follows:

    | % Top Ten
    --------------------------------
    Big Ten | *40%
    the SEC | 20%

Notes: *Poll does not include #7 Wisconsin's whuppin of #2 Pitt in Men's BBall today. :)
**Notre Dame can reasonably be considered an honorary member of the Big Ten, lifting the percetange to 50%.

    All-Sport Rankings

    1) Ohio St. (124.5) Freshman Center Greg Oden is averaging 15 and 7 in two games for the 8-1 Buckeyes. The Seven footer hit 8-8 from the line in last Saturday's victory over Cleveland St. After the game Oden was asked if his success from the line gave him any dreams of becoming a guard down the line, but the young Freshman responded, "I'm slow, and I get tired. And there's a lot of ballhandling." I guess Oden was listening in his first year Shakespeare course. Be true to thyself, Oden

    2) Wisconsin (112) The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team gave up a three goal lead and settled for a tie against St. Cloud St. last Saturday. The 16-1-3 Hockey team is in the midst of a month long hiatus, but returns January 5th for a doubleheader against No. 2 Minnesota.

    3) Oklahoma (101) The No. 6 Sooners Wrestling team (4-1, 0-1) took out No. 21 Cal Poly in its final match of 2006. Sam Hazewinkel, Matt Storniolo, Will Rowe, and Josh Hinton each recorded decisions for Oklahoma. Oklahoma hits the mat again on January 6th in South Grand Prairie, Texas.

    4) LSU (99.5) LSU defensive leaders LaRon Landry and Glenn Dorsey have both been named to the Associated Press' First-Team All-America. It's the first time two LSU players have been named to the team in the same season since 1997, when a punter and an offensive guard took the honors. The team will spend the remainder of the calendar year gearing up for its match-up against No. 11 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on January 3rd.

    5) Minnesota (89) Senior middle blocker Meredith Nelson was named Second-Team All-American by the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) on Wednesday. Malama "The Pinata" Peniata also received Honorable-Mention All-America honors. Awards all around!

    5) Florida (89) What happens when a gator meets a wolverine? Um. Anyway, the Gators will be playing the last game of the season on January 8th for the BCS national championship the Buckeyes. The Gators' victory over Arkansas on December 2nd gave the university its seventh SEC title in UF history.

    7) UNC (72) Say UNC-le! Say UNC-le! Senior Soccer Captain Heather O'Reilly polished off her college career with a second national championship and the Soccer America's Player of the year award. She led a team rich with freshman to the Tarheel's 19th national championship. O'Reilly will return to school next fall to see her jersey retired.

    8) Duke (71) Fans are halfway through the month of "tenting" to make sure they see their precious Dukies, currently ranked sixth in the nations, host UNC and a myriad of other teams around the ACC. With sophomore guard Greg Paulus back from a foot injury, and various freshmen taking the responsibility upon themselves to slap the backboard extra hard, because they don't call 'em college lay-ups for nothing, Duke seems to embody the one trait their teams have perennially lacked: backbone. Well as much backbone as a blue devil can possibly have.

    9) Notre Dame (67) No. 4 Men's Hockey cruised past No. 10 Michigan last weekend, and sophomore Erik Condra was named conference offensive player of the week by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

    10) Michigan (66.5) The Roses really smell like "woo woo" for the no. 3 Wolverine football team, which heads back to Pasadena to play USC on New Year's Day. The fate of the Wolverines can't help but make college football fans wonder how efficacious the BCS system has turned out to be...

  9. Minnesota used to be #1 a couple of years ago and would be higher now if their men's bball didn't suck. But their men's wrestling team is consistently one of the nation's best (pre-season #1).

I'll take wrestling over basketball anyday.

Unfortunately, no women's wrestling team. :-(

    Maybe one day.

Well, hopefully all the people that said Michigan should have been in the National Championship game will shut up now. LOL. I think it's pretty clear after tonight's ass kicking that Michigan is right where they deserve to be, barely in the top 10. USC toyed with Michigan for a half and then just humiliated them in the 2nd half. This is what happens when you don't play any quality teams during the season. Oh well, at least the controversy is over now. :D
