    Granville,

This is a perfectly good idea. I know traders that could use those green teletypes and make money - making money isn't dependent on your hardware...I use the LCD's because I am very sensitive to watching a bad screen all day long, and my style requires lots of screen real estate...

  2. Thanks Nitro, I'll go for this set-up for now.

What I should have included in the comparison was that with the LCD set-up you get the same amount of information, but as the resolution is lower, the total picture is of course larger, which should be an extra advantage.

  3. they still cost way to much compared to CRT's, about triple in many cases. They aren't 3X as good in my opinion, so I won't pay that much.

  4. 1. it is always cheaper to get CRTs vs LCDs. 19" CRT = 18" LCD (measure it)
    2. the larger LCDs are always more expensive than getting 2 smaller ones. i particiularly dont understand why people pay $3k+ for an Apple cinema display.. sure they are nice, but you can get 2 good 17" (or 18") LCDs for 1/3 the price, and have more space, to boot.
    3. LCDs are definitely easier on the eyes.
    4. LCDs generate less heat.

I use two LCDs.. one 18" analog and one 17" digital. The kicker was the eyestrain and the heat. Two computers and 2 20" CRTs in the same room with bright lighting and the place is an oven!! Also, even at 85Hz or higher, you will notice the flicker on a CRT after using an LCD for a month or so.

I have 2 Planar lcds and they have a 3 yr. parts and labor warranty with a 2 day replacement. See:

I don't know what their dead pixel warranty is though.

  6. I was just about to buy a LCD (before I decided to save the money and go for another CRT), so I did my research on them and found that Samsung seems leading when it comes to developing the display. They also have among the lowest prices combined with the best prestanda. The one I was going for was the 181T for about $900 - a gem.

I am too, like someone also said before, looking forward to prices to come down if and when they find a more efficient production method and people start buying more LCDs instead of CRTs which will bring competition to lower the prices to, let's say 1.5 times the CRTs.

Quick question for everyone. I am running (2) 15" Viewsonic VG150 Analog LCD displays. I have had these displays for about 2 years. I run them using a Matrox dual headed card.

My right monitor seems to be getting darker. I'm thinking maybe my backlight is going bad? I've never had an LCD display go bad before so I'm not really sure what to look for. They have about 1 year left on the warranty so that is good. The darkness just started appearing earlier this week.

    Any thoughts?

Always get some kind of extended warranty (usually not worth it, but is in this case) for any LCD flat panel monitors.. from what I understand they go bad much faster than crts.. their lifespan is shorter .. and since they're so expensive, you want some kind of extended warranty.

agree re crt's hotter, I've got 8 and have to run the a/c to compensate. don't ask about my electric bill lol.

I bought a couple samsung things earlier (vcr, monitor) and both broke within a year, junk in my opinion... now I just get sony.

  10. The 17" 170S has been dropped 30$ to 578$ I think it was today.

I believe it is not the newest Samsung avlb. but I like it because its case isn't as bulky as the newer one at Best Buy. Also mine look better.

Been running 3 for four months now and added a fourth today. So far so good.
