Trump's self-inflicted $83.3 million verdict https://www.wral.com/story/anna-marks-trump-s-self-inflicted-83-3-million-verdict/21255087/ The $83.3 million judgment that Donald Trump was ordered to pay to the writer E. Jean Carroll on Friday evening was entirely avoidable. All he had to do, after earlier being found guilty of sexual abuse and defamation, was just ... keep his mouth shut. Instead, he continued to defame her, and he was ordered to pay for it. You might have hoped that after today — finally! — Trump would have had reason to learn that his actions have consequences. Perhaps he would choose to return to Mar-a-Lago in sweet court-mandated silence. But his delusions of impunity are too strong. Mere moments after the verdict from a federal jury in New York, Trump’s Truth Social account declared the judgment “Absolutely ridiculous!” and cast the entire trial as a “Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.” It was Trump’s response that was absolutely ridiculous. He was the one who chose to sexually abuse Carroll. He was the one who chose to attack Carroll in news conferences and on the campaign trail after he was found guilty. He was the one who chose to post repeatedly about the case on social media, fomenting his followers’ outrage. In this case, if Trump is the target of the “witch hunt” he claims to be, then he built his own pyre. His false accusation that the ruling was motivated by partisan politics demonstrates his deep concern about the four other cases looming against him in federal and state courts. But it also reveals, better than any crime the former president is accused of committing, the vacuousness of his character. A man who takes no responsibility for his actions will dodge and deflect when he is found wanting. A man who takes no responsibility for his actions will not hew to higher powers designed to hold him accountable. Fortunately, the law was not designed to service Trump’s fragile ego. Voters should remember that they don’t have to do so, either. This article originally appeared in The New York Times.
Trump's courtroom antics, his lawyer's antics, and his continued use of social media to attack Carrol...had he stopped...he probably would his given the punitive damage a big haircut down to around $20 million instead of 83 million dollars. He just does not know how to keep his mouth shut but he probably thinks that if/when he becomes President again...he can VETO a defamation order from a civil lawsuit to pay up. Hopefully, he pays that lawyer who defended him because Trump has a history of stiffing (not paying or trying to get the GOP to pay) the lawyers when the court case is completed. wrbtrader
Should get through the appeals process well and get overturned, maybe even at SCOTUS. There was no evidence of sexual assault and no defamation. The case is an unconstitutional canard.
It changed my brother's vote (Doctor in South Dakota) and changed the vote of very close childhood friends who all in the picture (see below ET link) are alumni of the same university (Notre Dame) although I went to a different university. Friends now live in Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Florida, Minnesota, Illinois and North Carolina (not shown are the two people behind the camera)...smallest person in the pic is almost 5'9. https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/good-riddance-brian-kelly.363188/#post-5498571 I posted another picture in a different thread but can not locate the message post...ET search sucks. In that other pic..they are West Point alumni...veterans and active duty...people that stated they will change their vote for Trump to Biden or an Independent because of the guilty in the Trump's civil rape case and the defamation case...regardless of the outcome in the other criminal cases that are still pending. Unfortunately, it did not change the vote of the CatholicVote even though my family is Catholic along with many of my friends being Catholic and very active politically in their Catholic communities. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/tr...ote-new-hampshire-clock-ticks-closer-midnight Summary: It did change more than a single vote. More will change if Trump is convicted in any of the pending criminal cases. Other Catholic groups hint they will change (not endorse Trump) if he's convicted in any of the pending criminal cases. P.S. My oldest is at military school...he will be eligible to vote for the first time in the 2024 U.S. Presidential elections. A secondary school friend of his was raped in France. He stated he will not vote for Trump because he remembers the trauma/shame his friend endured. wrbtrader Old school Republican Will Never Vote for Trump
He has the "Best Lawyers". MAGA - "Making Attorneys Get Attorneys" Alina Habba's antics make her a candidate for Bar Assoc. disciplinary action https://www.rawstory.com/alina-habba-trial-chaos/ Donald Trump lawyer Alina Habba's "flagrant disregard" for courtroom rules could pave the way for Judge Lewis Kaplan to refer her to the State Bar for a hearing and investigation. According to former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance, the E. Jean Carroll case judge would be completely within his rights to ask the New York State Bar Association to review the former president's attorney's conduct after Kaplan repeatedly was forced to admonish her during the two-week trial. On her Substack platform, Vance suggested that Habba's lack of legal skills and knowledge about the rules of evidence aren't the issue so much as the chaos she repeatedly created in the civil trial she ultimately lost which cost her client $83.3 million on Friday. According to Vance, who called Habba's outbursts "disgraceful," she, "... would not be surprised to see the Judge refer her to the Bar Association for disciplinary action." Clarifying her reasoning, she explained, "It wasn’t her novice mistakes that were the issue, although they caused a lot of comments. It was her flagrant disregard of the Judge’s decisions about arguments that could and could not be made to the jury. She trod on those rulings despite repeated warnings from the Judge." Vance added the proper procedure when a lawyer feels the judge erred is to take it up later in an appeal. In the case of the combative Habba, the Trump attorney's "repeated strategy was to fight with the Judge. Tell her she couldn’t do something, and she jumped right in anyhow, repeatedly insinuating that Trump didn’t assault Carroll," the former prosecutor wrote. "The Judge would be well within his rights to let the Bar sort her out. Her lack of respect for the rule of law, which mirrors her client’s, is unacceptable in a lawyer," Vance concluded. Especially when SHE lost the case. Trump will blame her and not pay is my guess. She's well and truly fucked, excuse the pun.
