  5. Contribution here clearly reads primarily as a "thing, and object" rather than "something of value". Obviously the emphasis is here on anything that is convertible into finances because the point of this law is to prevent parties and campaigners from being unfairly disadvantaged because of different warchests. The point of this law is not about information at all hence interpreting something of value as "information that is beneficial" rather than the intended meaning of "something that is convertible into money" is a wrong interpretation imo.

This entire thing boils down to 3 words. Anything Of value. This link provide a legal definition of the term. You'll see that informational items are not included on the list.

I agree with GRULSTMRNN. However, I want to better understand your point. I have read on here numerous times that Hillary did not violate this law with respect to Christopher Steele and Ukraine. WRT Steele, the argument has been that Hillary paid Steele/GPS, therefore, it did not violate this law. Therefore, if Trump accepted foreign intelligence from Russia and sent them one penny, it would not violate the law. Is that correct from your perspective? What is the proper sequence of events in your opinion not to violate the law.

    1. Russia calls Trump and states they have info on Biden.
    2. Trump sends them one penny.
    3. Russia provides the info.
Furthermore, how would someone know how to value info without knowing anything about it to value it?

Information is just like an antique, it is worth whatever someone will pay for it.

Fox News Legal Analyst Pulls No Punches: Trump Is 'Prepared To Commit A Felony'

Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano said there’s not much room for interpretation when it comes to President Donald Trump’s claim that he’d “listen” if a foreign power offered dirt on a political rival.

“He would be committing a felony,” Napolitano told host Shepard Smith on Thursday.

Trump this week said “there’s nothing wrong with listening” to dirt on an opponent, no matter what the source.

“They have information,” he said in an ABC interview. “I think I’d take it.”

Napolitano said that would be a crime, and there’s “no wiggle room” as the Federal Election Commission has in previous cases decided that opposition research is considered a “thing of value.”

Under the law, a candidate can’t receive anything of value from a foreign national related to a U.S. election.

And that means Trump would be committing a crime.

“The president of the United States of America is prepared to commit a felony to get reelected,” he said. “That was my reaction, and it was not a happy one.”

Napolitano also said that whoever gives the president that info would also be committing a felony:
