Question. How can a satellite provide internet service over Africa? Phones, PC's, etc, can't beam up to satellites.... I don't understand how this is supposed to work. We wouldn't need cell towers everywhere if this were the case right?
Oh.. that makes sense. But if they already have that stuff in place... wouldn't they already have internet? That would be like having locomotives and hoping someone comes along and builds a railroad track.
Well, silly question here, or two silly questions.... one, why would they lay fiber across the ocean in the first place if a sat can do the job (probably security issue I guess), and two... why would it be any more expensive than fiber going to Europe. They(Europe) would have exponentially more bandwidth requirements than the African Continent I would think.
Fibre is faster than satellite but satellite is getting better. Less competition on the African fibre.
So is Zuckerbergs philanthropic efforts helping the people or the providers? I mean, ...if the providers are already in place... they have a set rate to obtain profitability. If their costs are higher because of the cost of the fibre.... then Zuck is essentially helping them by lowering their costs. Is his goal to save the people $5/month on their bills? That doesn't sound right. I thought it was to provide services to remote regions.
It is not a philanthropic effort. Free data for Facebook on www.internet.org means more advertising sales.
Tesla isn't down because of the explosion, it is very foolish to think this way, there are a lot of factors contributing to that. Merger with SCTY and the financial details of the deal is one of the main reasons.
You have to have infrastructure to get cash out of people. USA infrastructure is weak but profoundly better than 3rd world countries. Satellites, electric grids, water lines. It's all to help the people, and themselves. Enron half built a electric plant in India till the money didn't add up and abandoned the idea in mid swing because it would not generate enough money. You can call it what you like, but most companies just try to figure out ways to generate more money. Any company that offers bandwidth on lifi first will win the stock game. Lifi is like wifi but works off a light wave instead of a radio wave. Infinitely faster with speeds up to 25 gb a second in a lab setting. You can use a regular light bulb fixture just bad ass. The idea of wires is coming to a end. And fiber cable is a huge drag for them to work with. Phone lines a being phased out as we speak. We are starting to transmit electricity wireless. The wireless light revolution will be a huge stock play and huge change for how we get a receive info. And i think will eventually get to the point of having wireless houses for electricity eventually 100 years?? But lifi will come pretty quick i think. 5-6 years down the road.
