Now, experts are saying forget all those cleverly named solutions, and letâs just nuke the thing. The idea has been floating around for awhile and apparently was successfully used by the Soviet Union decades ago to stop a gushing oil well. But the US is saying âno way.â Never mind the destruction that a nuclear blast could cause to the already ravaged Gulf of Mexico and the radiation it would spew into the atmosphere, it turns out this tactic is also against international law. Experts and talking heads have been all over the news lately spewing ideas about how to stop this catastrophe and now even the news is joining in. John Roberts, a CNN reporter suggested last week that BP, âdrill a hole, drop a nuke in and seal up the well.â The idea could technically work, melting the rock around the well and sealing it, but the Obama administration says no. Stephanie Mueller, a spokeswoman for the Energy Department said that no one in the administration was considering this idea, and one senior official told the New York Times, âitâs crazy.â Turns out itâs actually against the arms treaties that the United States has signed and would look terrible against President Obamaâs recent efforts to stop nuclear proliferation. Meanwhile the official Deepwater Horizon response page is so desperate that itâs taking suggestions. Theyâve got a little button where you can write in and give them your best answer to solving this enormous problem. Theyâve already recieved 20,000 suggestions and they note theyâll read every one. If your suggestion is considered feasible youâll be contacted by BP â just do us a favor and name it something intelligent because we canât take anymore âjunk shotsâ. Until a fix is found, letâs just hope that this whole disaster leads to the creation of better engineered solutions in the future. Resorting to nuclear bombs is never a good sign.

The exact same people who were saying it was/is safe to deep water drill are the ones saying it is safe to nuke... It should give any reasonable person cause to pause... Just like the same people who blindly supported Bush for 8 years claim they are right on the issues these days... 8 years of Bush is as strong an argument to never trust the neocons and baggers as one could make... The idiotic right wingers are hoping for and Armageddon because they think Jesus will rapture/teleport them to Heaven...for the klannish, Jesus is like a "get out of jail free card" in monopoly... To them it doesn't matter how badly they fuck up the earth...they think they are bound for heaven no matter how much of a hell on earth they create.

We should have a radio "call in" with ideas, the winner gets free tickets to Dave Mathews. What a bunch of pin heads. Nuke the hole was probably suggested in the first 15 minutes of the disaster... We can drop a bomb on Hiroshima, but to stop a leak, it's against the law. My guess, BP and the Feds aren't interested in ruining a nice well, which is probably what would happen.
