Firstly, I'm not playing the race card. Please look up the definition of that phrase. Most anything can be used as intended, or anything can be bastardized. Your "evidence" shows the original intent of the workout. The OP shows the bastardized version. Why do I think the bastardized version of the workout notice is racist, rather than in just poor taste without regard to race? 1. They likely were aware of the original disclaimer attached to the workout, which clarified that the workout was not created in poor taste. Which explains why your "evidence" gym didn't view it as black on black racism. This is all very obvious. Advice: research elements discrimination similarly situated You'd had a stronger case had you shown that a "White" 'gym' wasn't being racist, rather than exclaiming, in effect, if not in these exact words, "Hey! Look! I found a Black gym that wasn't being racist towards a murdered Black man! What do you have to say about that!" 2. A reasonable person would know that it would be in poor taste, as this, you seem to admit; to not include the disclaimer. 3. The OP gym added an image, in all black, in a kneeling position. Again, a reasonable person would agree that this is poor taste. So how to I connect this up to racism? If OP gym person has the audacity to post that sign, in light of the racial tension, unrest, and upheaval; then they are telling me that they want to be included in the racial drama. No reasonable person would do such a thing if they didn't want to be pigeonholed. I've seen where people used to be racist when they were younger, but still had the associated tattoos as they got older; but only now decided to get them covered. They went out of their way to not be even mistaken as a racist. A reasonable person wouldn't want to be mistaken as something they disagree with. Research 'circumstantial evidence.' We don't need proof beyond a doubt to put a man in jail on just circumstantial evidence. And we certainly don't need it to know when racism is being perpetrated by a racist. I think it is more insensitive and in poor taste taking a dying man's words and turning it into a workout, I don't think there was a racist angle, just a stupidity/clueless. People need to think just an extra minute before taking all that time to write out something like that. I think the follow up is the employee got fired. As an owner, if you are that stupid to not read the room then it is best we part ways and you work elsewhere.
Everyone is afraid of hurricanes because they are a force of nature that comes through and destroys and damages. There are no few bad hurricanes ruining it for the rest of hte great beneficial hurricanes. Hurricanes are not human beings who deserve to be treated with respect, they are something all people should have a healthy fear and respect of when they come through your town.
Ok, I'm not going to say it was easy to follow all of your reasoning in this post, but it is your reasoning and you are certainly entitled to an opinion. You believe it is racist and in poor taste. I merely believe it is in poor taste and I see no evidence of racism. But I believe this is a perfect example of where the race mob takes us, and I appreciate you providing that.
Agree wholeheartedly. I think an employer should have previewed it, but that might not be realistic to expect of a gym. Still, the reaction should be that the employee is fired over stupidity and risk reduction, if nothing else. But agree, there doesn't seem to be a race angle here - not unless you want there to be. If you want to be offended, you'll always find a reason to be. The importance here is for a reasonable center (and I don't know what that is yet) to agree what is and is not racism. You're always going to have fringe people calling obvious racism not racism, and you're always going to have people who see racism where there is clearly none. It is up to the reasonable middle to draw the lines on what society will follow - as all else is subjective and there is no way to legislate subjectivity.
I am quite aware that a hurricane isn't a human being that needs to be treated with respect. Trust me, I can differentiate this. My point is actions appear driven by self-preservation instinct. Are such actions considered racist?
