What a fine thread, John47 in particular: wonderful to come to these sort of realisations so early in your life - particularly about your father. It is rare to find so much reflection in a "young turk".

For those who mention an Ivy League education (or its equivalent on the other side of the Atlantic) it is no guarantee either of success or happiness although it undeniably gives you a good start.

For many a human, life is always greener elsewhere and everywhere else. Many of us only appreciate our blessings much later in life and then, if we are very, very lucky and work very, very hard at it, can achieve a measure of wisdom and tranquility.

Whatever you do in life, it is tough to be happy and human. Some of you might apprciate this little quote, written in 1932 by a remarkable Australian, Dr Beran Wolfe:

“If you observe a really happy man you will find him building a boat, writing a symphony, educating his son, growing double Dahlias in his garden, looking for dinosaur eggs in the Gobi desert. He will not be searching for happiness as if it were a collar button that has rolled under the cupboard in his bedroom. He will have become aware that he is happy in the course of living 24 crowded hours of the day.

For those who seek the larger happiness and greater effectiveness open to human beings, there can be but one philosophy of life, a philosophy of constructive altruism. The good life demands a working philosophy as an orientating map of conduct. This is the golden way of life. This is the satisfying life. This is the way to be happy though human.”
