Scientists Warn of Perilous Climate Shift Within Decades, Not Centuries ......................................The paper, written by Dr. Hansen and 18 other authors, dwells on the last time Earth warmed naturally, about 120,000 years ago, when the temperature reached a level estimated to have been only slightly higher than today. Large chunks of the polar ice disintegrated then, and scientists have established that the sea level rose 20 to 30 feet. Climate scientists agree that humanity is about to cause an equal or greater rise in sea level, but they have tended to assume that such a large increase would take centuries, at least. The new paper argues that it could happen far more rapidly, with the worst case being several feet of sea-level rise over the next 50 years, followed by increases so precipitous that they would force humanity to beat a hasty retreat from the coasts. “That would mean loss of all coastal cities, most of the world’s large cities and all their history,” Dr. Hansen said in a video statement that accompanied the new paper. The paper identifies a specific mechanism that the scientists say they believe could help cause such an abrupt climate shift. Their idea is that the initial melting of the great ice sheets will put a cap of relatively fresh water on the ocean surfaces near Antarctica and Greenland. That, they think, will slow or even shut down the system of ocean currents that redistributes heat around the planet and allows some of it to escape into space. Warmth will then accumulate in the deeper parts of the ocean, the scientists think, speeding the melting of parts of the ice sheets that sit below sea level. In addition, a wider temperature difference between the tropics and the poles will encourage powerful storms, the researchers contend. The paper cites evidence, much of it contested, that immense storms happened during the warm period 120,000 years ago. ..........The new paper may reopen that debate, requiring scientists to re-examine the idea with the more sophisticated computer models of the climate that are available today. It could take several years for the experts to come to a consensus, though. Dr. Hansen spent decades heading NASA’s climate research unit in Manhattan, before retiring in 2013. He now heads a center created for him at Columbia University. He gained fame in 1988 when he warned Congress that global warming had already begun. He was ahead of the scientific consensus at the time, but it became clear in retrospect that Earth had been in the midst of a period of rapid global warming at the time he testified. Even scientists wary of the specific claims in the new paper point to Dr. Hansen’s history to argue that his ideas need to be taken seriously. “I think we ignore James Hansen at our peril,” Dr. Mann said. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/23/s...lights&contentPlacement=1&pgtype=sectionfront
will the bullshit ever stop? he predicted it for now... 28 years ago. as I posted just a few days ago... But, the sea level in Manhattan is lower than it was in 1950. No Human footprint at all. https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2016/03/23/falling-sea-level/
Global warming proponents caution against using global warming data to prove global warming is occurring: "Scientific models are too uncertain to treat as fact" In the fight for climate action, data isn't always your friend http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/mar/25/climate-change-action-imperfect-data-epa
The Anthropocene extinction event rolls along..... Sydney (AFP) - Aerial surveys of Australia's Great Barrier Reef have revealed the worst bleaching on record in the icon's pristine north, scientists said Tuesday, with few corals escaping damage. Researchers said the view was devastating after surveying some 520 reefs via plane and helicopter between Cairns and the Torres Strait in the north of Queensland state. "This will change the Great Barrier Reef forever," Terry Hughes, an expert on coral reefs from James Cook University, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "We're seeing huge levels of bleaching in the northern thousand kilometre stretch of the Great Barrier Reef." Just over a week ago, the Australian government revealed bleaching at the World Heritage-listed site was "severe" but noted that the southern area had escaped the worst. Bleaching occurs when abnormal environmental conditions, such as warmer sea temperatures, cause corals to expel tiny photosynthetic algae, draining them of their colour. Conservationists put the bleaching squarely at the feet of climate change. "When you look at those stark, white photos, you're looking at the face of climate change," WWF-Australia spokesperson Nick Heath said.
The Role of Sunspots and Solar Winds in Climate Change Do these natural phenomena have a greater impact on climate change than humans and industrialization? "...Many climate scientists agree that sunspots and solar wind could be playing a role in climate change, but the vast majority view it as very minimal and attribute Earth’s warming primarily to emissions from industrial activity—and they have thousands of peer-reviewed studies available to back up that claim. Peter Foukal of the Massachusetts-based firm Heliophysics, Inc., who has tracked sunspot intensities from different spots around the globe dating back four centuries, also concludes that such solar disturbances have little or no impact on global warming. Nevertheless, he adds, most up-to-date climate models—including those used by the United Nations’ prestigious Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—incorporate the effects of the sun’s variable degree of brightness in their overall calculations...." http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/sun-spots-and-climate-change/
point 1... did you guys actually read this... its all about models. he implicitly admits the models are not really good evidence of anything... by saying the only way to really know if the sun sunspots are causing warming would be to reduce co2. (which is bullshit because co2 is only one variable... but nevertheless the implicit point is the models don't really count for proof of anything.) point 2. I have read enough of these....to see the formula. When agw nutter scientist speaks of co2 causing warming they don't cite to science becuase there isn't any they cite to the IPCC (and its models) or the consensus. If there were science this spokesman for Heliphysics would have been citing to it. ( speaks... manage to speak about the lack of evidence for say... the sun or the tides causing all the warming in their study.... then when they speak of co2 causing warming either the author of the article or the scientists cite to the IPCC... instead of actual science. There is zero science every in any of these pro agw science articles supporting the idea that man made co2 causes warming...all they do is cite the IPCC or the fraudulent consensus.
as a diver I have seen the bleeching out happening in belize too. Why don't we take some of the money being wasted on this junk co2 causing warming "science" and see what we can do about the reefs. Would less pollution help... or is the real culprit the warming coming out of the vents in the indian ocean.
Looks like the polar bears are doing just fine. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ece3.2030/full Considering both TEK and scientific information, we suggest that the current status of Canadian polar bear subpopulations in 2013 was 12 stable/increasing and one declining (Kane Basin). We do not find support for the perspective that polar bears within or shared with Canada are currently in any sort of climate crisis.
STRONGER ones. Which are happening. Along with larger precip events. The prediction of MORE hurricanes was never made. Dummy. Get it straight before criticizing. Bahahahahhahhaah. Typical misinformed delusional conservative.
