In my opinion "they", like all of us, are simply trying to maintain some stability - to postpone the inevitable. Unfortunately, the only way out will probably require a significant crises, significant enough to reinvent or at least rebuild manoy of the social structures we take for granted - pretty much from the ground up. It's happened before and, not that I remember, but I doubt that is was anymore welcome then. Until then, I think we dance while the music plays (think of the roaring twenties)
selloff happens when last of the bears cave ,when everyone is convinced that we are out of the woods and it'll be clear sailing,and the sentiment has swung in that direction drastically in the last 6 weeks
