Epicurus on God

  1. Yeah, right. Equal footing. Let's forego the "nuance" of intra-societal disparity, even though it can be material, and go straight for the jugular, lest the "gray area" contrast escapes you. Someone is born into a wealthy family in the Western world, and someone is born into a poverty-stricken tribe in an unstable Third World country. Same difference, eh? No luck there, right? Equal footing. Similar opportunities and hardships. Sure.

  2. You can't even correctly state what my position is, let alone intelligently debate this. No wonder you "think" God doesn't exist because God hasn't behaved as a human would.

  3. And you provide us with great examples of this almost every day.

Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Nothing any of us can say will sway the unbeliever, because things Holy are not discernible by the fallen carnal nature of man, unless it be given to them by the Holy Spirit. Unless their hearts have been prepared, your arguments fall on deaf ears.

All here have been told the truth, it's their decision.

Praying for them is better than this bickering.

This world will continue and increase in it's wickedness till the appropriate time.

In defense of "bickering", perhaps we can hope for a "fool who persists in his folly" kind of outcome? ; )

  7. Yes - that is what Buffett called "The Ovarian Lottery". A lot depends on where you are born and to whom.

Poor families will obviously have a greater likelihood of under-nourishing their developing fetuses and newborns. Access to education would also be a problem after that.

Unfortunately, those better-off can (if they are so-inclined) later point to their diminished faculties and say "Look, they're stupid."

I have seen strenuous objections against abortion, but not so much against poverty that can assault a fetus while still in the womb - essentially "torturing" it by starvation. A strange dichotomy.

And to the same people against abortion (even with rape) is ok to have abortion if the mother have the risk to die. So they can change the god rule when they fear THEY can die. So holy.

For millions, g-d is not an anthropomorphic, personal g-d who interferes and intrudes in human affairs and there exits a transcendental and more profound understanding, which IMHO is the more balanced and philosophically solid one. It is the ones with limited imagination or intellect who limits god to personal human faculties who judge, smite or otherwise interfere with the mess we create - like most american churches, clergy or stupid sheep followers who send money to TV personalities. Heaven and Hell are human constructs and they reflect the mindset and behavior of the beholder.

  10. Interesting post. However, this thread is about those people who actually believe in a deity, and how they go about defending their misguided beliefs.
