A guide to how swing states count their votes. So you don't start celebrating or drinking yourself into unconsciousness too early.

What are red and blue 'mirages,' and how election night vote counts make it hard to tell who will win
A big lead at some point on election night doesn’t always mean a candidate will win. That’s because different places and types of votes get counted at different speeds.

  4. In general most states have a county or city that has historically ended out voting the same way that the state does.

Those can be attention-getters even if they report early. And justifiably so.

Markets decide: Apparently, the invisible hand works for elections, too. The state of the S&P 500 in the three months prior to an election can indicate whether the incumbent party will stay or go. If the index is up, the incumbent will stay, and if it posts losses, then the incumbent will lose—this has been the case for 20 of the last 24 elections. The S&P three-month return is up.—CC

  9. Are you mourning the loss of tobacco business...you know how many billions that industry has cost the country from cancer? Please you dont give a shit about tobacco farmers.

... remember that a big enemy to tobacco was Surgeon General Koop......under Reagan and Bush...

Koop released a series of reports that highlighted the dangers of tobacco use, including:
    • 1982: Attributed 30% of cancer deaths to smoking

    • 1986: Established that environmental tobacco smoke is dangerous

    • 1988: Concluded that nicotine is addictive and tobacco use is a chronic disease

More people stopped smoking because they were tired of dying from cancer or getting their jaws removed from chewing tobacco.

this is what happens when facts hit you in the face...
