Election 2024 Foreplay

  1. Ahh, it is already dicey.

The state cut-off dates are well before the early voting begins.

In addition, about 30 states have agreed to defer to the DNC process and approval for replacing a nomine but that leaves 20 or so that have a review process and various hoops to jump through back in the states- which chews up time.

Ohio already had to pass a bill to meet the current convention date lateness. Every day you get past, say, the middle or third week of August, you pick up a new problem.

In Ohio, there was sort of a bipartisan feeling (even if through gritted teeth) that you needed to move the deadline and could not just disenfranchise all the dem voters. Democracy required some flexibility there, arguably. But I don't think one can assume that republicans will not fight- tooth and nail- any last minute shortcuts to let dems on ballots just because they created a mess. Gonna be a lotttt of rich lawyers before this is over.

The time to print ballots have already passed for a number of states. If they change their nominee from Joe Biden, there is a good chance, in some states, the new Democrat nominee would not even be on the ballot for some states. That is fine by me and I am sure most Trump voters. Should nullify any cheating done by the Democrats. Go for it guys.

  5. Depending on who runs in a mini-primary if there is to be one, most of the candidates- with the exception of Biden and Kamala have already missed the ballot deadline.

The Democrats do not agree with this but the republican position will be/is this:

States have deadlines to file to run for president. They then hold primaries (even if unchallenged) and then the winner out of that gets confirmed and then notification is sent back to the state to put that person on the final ballot.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!! Where the frig does it say that a totally new candidate- not previously involved in the process can just be chosen by the convention and then the convention gets to tell the state "hey, we know the date to file to run for president was six months or more ago in your state but we just pulled a new candidate out of our arse so we want that person on the ballot? Those original deadlines in the states are deadlines to file to run, not just deadlines to meet printing requirements. The intent of a brokered convention when they are necessary is to sort out the count amongst those who are running and have delegate votes- not to create "open mike night" for any new person who wants in.

Arguably, the convention or a mini-primary can sort out who gets the nomination but unless that person originally filed to run in each state, well, that's going to be a problem. Dems say "no prob." Heh, tell it to the states and the pubs. As I said: "Gonna be a whole lotta lawyering going on."
