Lazy Acres Natural Market had coconut hint the other day, and I thought it had an interesting flavor when I first took a sip (sample) right after leaving the store. However, when I took a second gulp later in the day, I came to the conclusion that I didn't like it after all. I still held the same opinion when I finished the rest at dinner time. I could definitely taste the coconut, but I also detected other weird flavors that were not at all pleasing to me.
BLOOD SUGAR AND RUMORS VS RESEARCH STUDIES A study in Japan has shown that xanthan gum-based fluid thickener can lower blood glucose levels after eating. Sorbitol, less commonly known as glucitol, is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste which the human body metabolizes slowly. Sugar alcohols, including sorbitol, have been shown to benefit oral health in several ways, primarily because they are noncariogenic: in other words, they don't contribute to cavity formation. The act of chewing also protects teeth from cavity-causing bacteria by promoting the flow of saliva. The increased saliva and noncariogenic properties (along with sweetness) are why sugar alcohols (sorbitol and xylitol) are used in sugar-free chewing gum. Sorbitol may be useful as an alternative to sugar for people with diabetes as it significantly reduces the rise in blood glucose and the insulin response associated with the ingestion of glucose. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol occurs naturally in some plants, including many fruits and vegetables. It has a sweet taste and is often used as a sugar substitute. Though it looks and tastes like sugar, it has 40% fewer calories. On the other hand, researchers suggest that using mouthwash at least twice every day destroys "friendly" oral bacteria, which can, in turn, alter blood sugar metabolism and promote diabetes, particularly for people who are already at high risk for the condition. Consuming ginger regularly helps in reducing the blood sugar levels and regulate insulin. Take an inch of ginger and bring it to a boil with a cup of water in a saucepan. Simmer for 5 minutes and strain. Drink this 1 to 2 times daily. Peanuts and peanut butter have even been shown to help lessen the spike in blood sugar when paired with high-carbohydrate or high-GL foods. Peanuts and peanut butter are both low GI and GL foods, as they contain healthy oils, protein, and fiber that have a positive effect on blood sugar control.
How is sourdough bread more nutritious than whole wheat? Sourdough is a healthier alternative to regular white or whole wheat bread. Although it has comparable nutrients, the lower phytate levels mean it is more digestible and nutritious. The prebiotics also help to keep your gut bacteria happy, and it may be less likely to spike blood sugar levels. insider.com However... though sourdough bread can boast a low Glycemic Index, better digestibility and an increased nutritional profile, whole wheat has been known to have increased health benefits due to its higher fiber content and nutritional levels.
