The Target on Atlantic Avenue had tropical hint today, so I tried it and was surprised because, unlike the other hint favors, it was thicker than pure water. So, I looked at the label again and noticed for the first time that it was hint vitamin. (I still failed to notice the + symbol that followed the name of the drink.) In looking at the ingredients, I saw that it had 5% of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A, 100% of Vitamin C, 50% of Vitamin B12 and 10% of Zinc. It was also sweeter than all the other flavors I've tried. But, that sweetness left an unnatural flavor and, along with the thickness, removed the clean, fresh sensation I have after drinking the other flavors (not to mention pure water). Were all those fruit flavors the source of the sweetness and the vitamins and minerals the source of the thickness? Probably not in the case of minerals, because they are added to other water drinks that have the exact same consistency as water. So, I had a decision to make. Was the trade off of extra sweetness worth the sacrifice of a clean, fresh sensation and the price of an unnatural aftertaste? From my perspective, it was not! In typing this post, I noticed that Target's ad says it has no sugar or diet sweeteners added. The struck me as kind of suspicious. (The label says 0 sweeteners...period!) I therefore looked at the label more carefully and saw something called gluconate. What's that? I looked it up online, but its description might as well have been written in another language, so I typed: Is gluconate a sweetener? This after asking if gluconate and gluconic acid are the same thing, and this is the information I got... The salts of gluconic acid are known as "gluconates". Gluconic acid, gluconate salts, and gluconate esters occur widely in nature because such species arise from the oxidation of glucose. Gluconate is a glucose derivative, existing as a salt of gluconic acid known to chelate divalent metals; gluconic acid is found naturally in fruits, honey and wine. Of course, glucose is a sugar with the molecular formula C₆H₁₂O₆. I feel like hint is trying to pull a fast one here, but in any case, there is definitely no more topical hint in my future!

Is corn the least nutritious vegetable? Yes, corn is a vegetable, but it's a better source of sugar than actual vitamins. Corn is high in simple sugar carbohydrates and has virtually no indigestible fiber (the kind that keeps you regular and lowers blood cholesterol). ~myrecipes.com
Why are complex carbohydrates better than simple carbohydrates? Complex carbohydrates contain longer chains of sugar molecules than simple carbohydrates. The body converts these sugar molecules into glucose, which it uses for energy. As complex carbohydrates have longer chains, they take longer to break down and provide more lasting energy in the body than simple carbohydrates.
How does inflammation defend against injury and infection? During inflammation, the blood supply increases, helping carry immune cells to the affected area. Because of the increased blood flow, an infected area near the surface of the body becomes red and warm. The walls of blood vessels become more porous, allowing fluid and white blood cells to pass into the affected tissue. Why is chronic inflammation bad for you? Left unaddressed, chronic inflammation can damage healthy cells, tissues and organs, and may cause internal scarring, tissue death and damage to the DNA in previously healthy cells. Ultimately, this can lead to the development of potentially disabling or life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer or Type-2 diabetes.
