This story might frame the methane problem in a more realistic light.

    Conclusion

The danger of loss of buoyancy and cascading tsunamis in the Gulf of Mexico -- caused by the release of the massive methane and poisonous gas bubble -- has been a much lower probability in the early period of the crisis, which began on April 20th. However, as time goes by and the risk increases, this low probability high impact scenario ought not to be ignored, given that the safety and security of the personnel involved remains paramount. Could this be how nature eventually seals the hole created by the Gulf of Mexico oil gusher?

  2. We can beat mother nature. Let's use the MOAB.

This sounds like the next Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster...where a team of scientists lead by Bruce Willis undergo a treacherous mission to deliver a giant dose of 'Beano' to prevent the Earth from unleashing a catastrophic fart.

  4. Ok, I originally misread this to mean the second destruction of the earth (first was flood), not the second angel in Revelation.

I'll go sit down quietly now

so it takes 4 billion years and everything goes off with a gigantic fart, sounds like something from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

That's not going to make for an exciting movie. May have to apply some artistic license when this is filmed and compress those millions of years down to a couple of days. :)

As much as I like Willis flicks, wouldn't that just insure the fart happens and set it all on fire as it erupts?

    Uh, methane is highly flammable...

I suspect that alien civilizations are aware of this pending doom in 2012 because they have advanced technology that can scan the Earth's mantle, and are doing field research of the Earth to colonize it:
