News is usually reflected in the opening price, so if you're asking about not putting in a buy (after bad news), or a sell (after great news) for the opening only strategy....let's fall back to the basics....buy on rumor, sell on news. So often, a stock will open up significantly based on news, earnings, yada yada (sorry, an old Seinfeld fan), and then drop directly back....thus increasing profits. As to tactics: If there is good news, I will increase my pricing envelope to fall within the pre-market indication. If there is bad news, I look at the overall anticipated market opening numbers to determine buy pricing. Stocks fall, bounce slightly, then fall quickly if the overall market is down. I am much quicker to sell up openings than to over-buy down openings.
Friday was textbook, 5 fills, 4 winners....net about 750 or so. in NYC for the expo....hope to see all the "usual suspects" there...and a few friends, new and old. I will try not to get ambushed at the ET get together on Sunday..... Not sure about this "high speed connection in the Marriott....but hopefully this will all come through. Back to you later....
It's important to distinguish between normal news and the kind of news that might lead to a trading halt or wholesale dumping. Earnings, contract awards, new products, restatements, warnings, even M&A, I would call normal news that you would expect to be reflected in the opening price. SEC investigations, accounting issues, criminal charges, discovering a cure for cancer, those are not normal items and you are taking too big a risk to fade those openings.
Don and TheEdge, What envelope size did you use on Friday ? I used .7 and didn't get filled on any. I passed IBM because of the accounting related news, and I am glad that I did that. These are the stocks that I pick from for my opening orders. Would appreciate ypur comment on my selection. MU TXN IBM AOL LLY MRK SGP BMY PFE JNJ BAC C JPM LEH MER WMT HDI FRE FNM ABT IGT STM NKE HDI JPM GE HON thanks, Jim
I used .7 on both sides Friday..... Friday was sort of "textbook" again, nothing great 3 out of 4 winners, only small profits....$320 approx.....(My head was already heading for NYC....I will double check the numbers when I return on Wednesday. I will try to do my opening from my hotel room tommorow morning, Tuesday, and bring the numbers down to the Expo floor - provided the STSN service in the room works well with my Redi and my Active-X (should be no problem).... To "mercuna" (I believe)....call me in the office and I will send you the speadsheet via email......I will post Feb in total on the ET board here at the end of the month..... BTW, having a good time in NYC...met with OZ, Gene W., Jeff Dewit, Protrader CEO and Prez (actually my brother had most of that meeting)....Saw WorldCo, did not see Hitman (as far as I know anyway...am hoping to).....Saw McMaster (from TA )...hoping to see him (Anthony) again when I have some more time... More scoop tomorrow.....good meeting a bunch of ET's......especially enjoyed chatting with Martha!!!!
I'm in the hotel room, setting up Redi...and will hope to get the opening done before heading down to the expo (I promised results to those coming to the booth....).....Hope I get them in on time......just babbling now, waiting for REDI to get installed....
