First off, you are stretching the truth here. Even if true though, yes much preferred to president who raises taxes, institutes health care mandate, weakens the military, hampers Israeli relations and diminishes USA standing in the world. ( amongst other things)
So you really don't live in reality. The world standing for America has gone downhill since Trump got elected. Oh yes, dumping billions of US taxpayer money for nothing into Israel is an amazing plan. Why don't you just come out and say that Trump is only happy if there is perpetual war in the Middle East. Health care mandate, ah yes, because the US healthcare system was working so well - the most expensive in the world, ridiculously so. In your insane world it's normal to just increase % of defense spend in GDP every year. Guess what, a good leader spends less on the military when it's practical. I know that idea is difficult for you to grasp. You want higher expenditure on the military but also lower taxes, hey, don't let simple math stand in your way.
In order for the US to be prepared for defense, military spending needs to be at 10 percent GDP. We are currently at a substandard level of 3 percent GDP and are woefully unprepared for a major conflict. So yes military spending needs to be ramped up and social programs stopped from growing and actually need to be cut. My goodness, half of the planes in the Air Force cannot currently fly.
When the U.S. is willing to pay to be liked, our ratings are higher. When we ask for countries to pay their fair share of NATO or UN costs, they don’t like us as much.
What we really need is to get more bang for the buck. I estimate that Russia gets 10 to 1 more value of the money they spend on military hardware than we do. Yes I know our systems have a great paint job and an impressive logo, but that is not going to help us in battle. In addition, it appears our “defence” contractors manage the “life cycle” of their products such that technology and capability is effectively being delayed or withheld. This wouldn’t help us win a battle or war either. Hopefully Trump will address this issue rather than blindly throw money at military contractors.
It has very little to do with NATO. The polls are global, including the countries that dislike NATO. US is waging wars, attacking countries left and right for pure economic gain, at least in the past few years. Why should others spend a lot of money that could be used elsewhere for whimsical ventures like Iraq and Afghanistan?
