Saw a real nice piece today on the amount of food being being given to local food shelters and such from the federal government. They interviewed a couple of the administrators for the local food banks, they said they can’t remember a time when they’ve had so much fruit and vegetables, top quality pork products to disperse throughout the local in-need families. Government is buying the food that would be sold to China and feeding those in need here at home.
Well of course, the history of the food stamp program is that it was originally a surplus agricultural commodities program which allowed farmers to produce when there were not enough buyers in the depression and after. So farmers maintained production - or higher production- and sold to the government and the food went to the needy beneficiaries. There was no buying Doritos and Milk Duds with the coupons in those days.
I can remember government commodities growing up, best peanut butter in the world. The way everything is reported/slanted these days you’d think Trump was paying farmers for nothing, plowing crops under. Yes it would be nice to open those Chinese markets back up, but at least they’re helping some Americans who need it with the food. And healthy food at that.
Tis true, as you mentioned, that recipients are in Hog Heaven right now if you like pork. https://news.slashdot.org/story/19/...e-of-uneaten-bacon-is-the-biggest-in-48-years
