That's just it. You won't own up, because you won't consider having slipped. Someone who is a race baiter, or labels everyone/everything he/she disagrees with as racist isn't going to see the err in their thinking. For example, you consider the travel ban that Trump is putting in place racist. You've stated this openly. Israel openly profiles travelers on it's airline and to it's country. They do this because they have realized that a certain nationality/religious group has an overwhelming statistical probability of hurting them, and as a result they've taken precautions. To you, this is racist. To them, it is life or death and protecting their citizens. In both of these posts, gwb schooled you (no pun intended) on how education statistics for non-hispanic, white students are actually ranked quite highly in the world and the US's overall low ranking has to do with urban areas being included in the ranking (which is true). Instead of focusing on the problem of poor inner-city school quality and teacher aptitude, you immediately claimed this was racist. This is exactly like the Chicago example I offered above. Of all the racist commentary and posters on this forum you could have called out and I might have been inclined to agree, gwb is not one of them. He's probably one of the most level-headed posters on this entire website. You labeled him because you didn't like what he was saying. Here's a thread where you've basically written off the entire United States as a racist and bigoted place where social values have deteriorated past the point of all hope. And that's just pointing out stuff from the first page of a search for the word "racism" in your posts. There are five full pages more of threads where you're going off on someone or some other idea you dislike as racist and bigoted. Some you might have a point on. But mostly...nah, you're one who likes to label, as I said originally.
I do not doubt that there are justified times for calling someone's view racist. There have been some times on this site. But when you overuse it and blanket all ideas that you don't agree with as racist, you're labeling and you're quickly making the label ineffective in the same manner crying wolf convinced the towns people to ignore the little boy.
Yeah, but there's a lot of crap at the edges posted by people who think they're being clever. Dog-whistling of sorts. If it were a one-off thing, then you couldn't draw a meaningful conclusion. But when it's an ongoing pattern with some posters? Just because it's not in-your-face blatant doesn't mean it's not there.
Perhaps. But here's a thought, Freddie. Try going after the issue and ignoring the dog whistling unless it's over the top. Otherwise, you spend all your time being petty (not you, but anyone) and good debate is missed. I will fully admit to being caught up with that in the past. I'm making a genuine effort to raise above it now.
But that's the thing. Dog-whistling is dog-whistling. It's either there or it isn't. Just because it might be "subtle" to some doesn't make it okay. I wish Baron would consider a broken window policy to moderation, especially in this forum. I'm okay with insults, but outright bigotry shows low moral character. Why would I bother debating such a person? Any possible debate on the issue discussed pales in comparison to the utter indecency of the dog-whistler. And while debate matters may be theoretical, the bigotry is real and right here. It takes precedence. Remember Edmund Burke's comment about doing nothing.
What you consider dog-whistling others may not. You and I certainly don't see eye to eye on a good deal of things, that doesn't make you wrong, or me wrong. You may find something offensive, I may not or vice versa. When you're calling someone a racist, it is from the basis of your own opinion. Get enough people behind the same opinion, it becomes generally accepted and agreed with. But it's just a group of opinions. Your threshold is much lower than mine in terms of what is considered bigotry. Nine enders is probably the lowest of all. Achillies, from all that I've seen has no issue at all with bigotry, and some things he says makes me raise an eyebrow and I can certainly see why NE or you might find issue in his statements. All of it, however, is highly specific to the reader's taste. Why not put them on ignore and be done with it?
