"While, the establishment media and foreign policy cognoscenti have the vapors over President Trump’s shorter-than-expected phone call with Australia’s head of government, Malcolm Turnbull, my favorite Aussie journalist, Andrew Bolt, understands what is really going. He writes in the Herald-Sun of Melbourne: MALCOLM Turnbull thought he could outsmart Donald Trump and trap him into taking 1250 of our boat people. Huge mistake, and now he’s been humiliated. There is no surprise that an angry Trump attacked Turnbull in their call at the weekend and hung up halfway through, after just 25 minutes. What did Turnbull expect? This political disaster was always on the cards from the moment Turnbull announced, on November 13 last year, that he’d signed a deal with then US president Barack Obama to take our boat people detained on Nauru and Manus Island. That was very dumb because just five days earlier Trump had been unexpectedly elected the next president, having campaigned hard against exactly this kind of thing. Trump had made it perfectly clear that he was against taking in alleged refugees from jihadist countries without at least “extreme vetting”. Turnbull knew this. In fact, he’d planned to announce his Obama arrangement early this year, but after Trump’s win rushed it forward in an apparent attempt to present Trump with a fait accompli — a done-deal the new President would not dare undo. This was always a high-risk gamble. Turnbull, asked last November whether he’d first checked with Trump, brushed the question aside: “We deal with one administration at the time. There is only one president of the United States at a time.” Bad call, and now Trump has called his bluff. this is an example of truthful cog com. See the difference piezoe? Turnbull and Obama tried to lay this on the lap of Trump. it was undiplomatic crap and Turmbull and Obama should be the ones taking the heat. Not Trump.
If the prime minister of Australia was the least bit competent then he would have realized pushing the Obama administration to sign this agreement days after Trump was elected would not make the new administration in the U.S. happy whatsoever. The Australian prime minister should have expected a very hostile audience on the phone call and that this would have been the top issue. Dumping UNVETTED Muslim illegal immigrants that Australia is unwilling to accept onto the U.S. because Australia no longer wants to pay for their upkeep on remote islands is simply unacceptable.
Piezeo so I don't have to change my view of you being intelligent. Please for once in your et life. Admit you were incorrect to go after Trump on this.
I really don't blame Turnbull that much. He had a big problem and Obama seemed to offer a way out. With a normal republicuck administration, it would have worked. Like a lot of foreign leaders, he is learning that Trump is transactional. If you want something from him, you better have something better to trade. And this euro-crap habit of expecting all kinds of favors, then turning around and criticizing everything he does isn't going to cut it either. You're either on the team or you're not, Theresa May.
so let me figure this out. cubans tend to be christain and many vote for republicans. So Obama turns cubans who arrive by boat into illegals after Trump is elected then he takes (many) muslims who arrive by boat and are therefore in illegal in Austrailia and brings them here.
