nutmeg and phenomena both make good points and nail the problem. Things are different now and immigration must change to accomodate that. This is where the left has gone off the rails. They will be the first to say that the consititution is a "living, breathing document" and should change as times change, yet will be quick to point out how we used to welcome immigrants with open arms, and that should never change. Forget the argument that the immigrants of decades gone by came with better values, and an understanding of what assimilation meant. Beyond that, it's become a numbers game. We simply cannot have this may people coming in to the system and expect to handle the financial aspect of it. Add to that, the slugs we have coming in have no interest in assimilation. They're looking for a life feeding at the government trough of public aid, which provides a better standard of living than the third world shithole they're coming from. I understand them wanting to come here for the free ride, but we must be strong enough to say no. In the leftist fantasy world, everyone is saved. Sorry, that ain't reality, and it never will be.
Whether or not the far left understands isn't the issue, the issue is that they don't CARE! They'd like to think that mass 3rd world immigration wont have any maladaptive effects on the west, but ultimately they don't care, because they believe it will create lots of left wing votes and ensure a return to power for the lefties, which to them is ultimately far more important than the actual well being of the country. Many of the far, far left don't want more American prosperity and see it through some deranged Marxist lense of the "rise of the proletariat", and a dispersal of wealth and power along marxist lines. The far left, much like a religious fanatic, will always see things through this deranged marxist, class obsessed world view. The truth is that nationality ultimately divides people more than "class", but they don't want to believe that as it doesn't fit their socialist narrative. Indeed "class" is relative in a national context. The idea that a nation has a right to act internally in it's own best interest is sickening and deplorable to these people. They don't feel that it's acceptable for a nation to put the interest of it's own people above that of others. It's ultimately a philosophical, rather than pragmatic gesture for most of them. It's pragmatic for them only in the sense that they will believe that it will afford them far more votes.
The actual history of immigration to this country is a lot less "melting pot" than some people know. Irish, Germans, Italians, Catholics, etc., all have been hated in turn. It took some of these groups decades to assimilate, and of course it's the kids that do it. (Oh, for hated immigrants, let's not forget the white man in general, by the original inhabitants.)

I thought you knew better than that!!1 Of course they all assimilated, they were all culturally and racially homogeneous. They were mostly all westerners, other first worlders, not 3rd worlders. That immigration can hardly be called "multiculturalism". We are a melting pot and plenty diverse already. We don't need droves and droves of maladaptive 3rd world immigration. Our experiment with "diversity" has been a disaster. Just as most every other such endeavor. In 50 years Africa will still be 99% African, Asia will be 95% asian, the middle east will be roughly 95% middle eastern, yet Europe will be minority european, as will the USA. Why don't we get to keep our civilizations too? I think it's Africa, the Middle east, and Asia's turn for more "diversity", we've had more than our fair share. It's their turn now. "Multiculturalism" causes more violence than anything else in the world. You should know this. In prison, it's not baptists killing Presbyterians. No, it's races killing or attacking other races. People segregate themselves. You can't legislate natural human preferences. This has nothing to do with hate or xenophobia. It's the truth.
