Does it help to work in NYC?

  1. As for AC in NYC, you need it 2 months out of the year not 10 months as is the case in Florida. You could live on the beach on Long Island just as well about 1 hour away from Manhattan.
As for the sophistication part of this equation , there is more to living than a pretty house and a nice view. I like to talk to people who read Harpers magazine on daily basis and not the National Enquirer. Read both publications and you will notice the difference, there are more tha subtle.
By taking dozens of trips to experience the NYC experience would probably cost around 50K extra (Hotels, taxis, first class air fare). however, you also have to include time spent travelling between FL and NYC. On yearly basis, it would easily add to extra 2 weeks of time that equals to another 40K (remember 20k per week equation?). So when you add up 50K + 40K = 90K. Therefore, from the initial 150K you are down to 60K deficit. Hardly a lot when you make 1 million a year. personally, I much rather stay in NYC experience what it has to offer, and it has A LOT going on if you have $$$$$$.
I think that in order to see it my way, you have to stop looking at 150K from your perspective and your income level. it is like trying to explain somebody from Vietnam that spending $40 on a meal in fine restaurant is not a fortune. He will consider it foolish and quickly explain to you that for 20 cents you could eat (in his view) the same dinner. For him eating on a dirty floor with flies all over, on a paper plate with plastic fork would not present a problem. I on the other hand would love to have my meal served on porcelain plate with a decent glass of wine and silver utensils to devour the bird, preferably with a nice piano playing in the background and experience it with people who have travelled extensively, are good conventionalists, and whose interests reach beyond football, or baseball. For that my friend, I need NYC and cannot se myself vegetating in Florida. :D :D :D

  3. you are right. maybe if i was rich enough to the point that i could throw $150K down the drain and not flinch, maybe NYC would be a different place to live. and plus, i would have so much money to do anything i wanted and one of the last things i would do is spend my time posting threads on elitetrader.com. but hey, when you have as much money as you do, maybe you have already done everything there is to do in the world so the only thing left to do is to post threads on elitetrader.com

for the past few years, the AC has been on in my office and my apartment from may to september (and this year october). that is quite a bit more than 2 months out of the year. on the other hand, you need the heater on in NYC for several months out of the year and never in miami.

and how can you compare the hamptons to south beach? are you seriously comparing the beaches of long island to south florida? the wealthiest new yorkers take their private planes to florida or bermuda for the weekend, not to long island.

what new yorker reads harpers? maybe this is an age thing since i dont hang out with the over 40 crowd. on the same token, i have never met anyone, anywhere that actually reads the enquirer either. and why would you lose 2 weeks income from taking weekend trips to NYC? you leave friday and come back sunday. unless you are a FX trader, you arent missing any action.

and can you please tell me where you can get a meal for $40 at a fine restaurant in NYC cuz that is a great freakin bargain. you talk like you are made of money and brag about your elitist snobbery but you only spend $40 at fine restaurants? wait dont tell me, you forgot to add a zero.

and people in vietnam dont use paper plates and plastic forks. they use ceramic plates and wooden chopsticks.

  4. From South Beach to Jupiter, half the people down here are New Yorker's.

  5. But do they make 1 million a year??????? If they were poor in NYC then it is a given that they could not partake in what this place has to offer. By being poor I mean making less than 300.000/year.

  6. I never claimed to have a lot of money. I am solid middle class, nothing more and nothing less. In all my posts on this particular thread I always underlined the fact that if I HAD a $1 million a year income I would stay in NYC. HAD being the operative word here.
As for AC, get a ceiling fan in all your rooms and you will not have to use AC for more than 6 weeks out of the year. Putting aside the saving factor, AC is not healthy for you and I like my bones and my lungs to much to damage them all year long by using AC.
As for the beaches, I was merely pointing out that if you are after that beach look, smell, experience, you can have it much closer to NYC and do not have to live in Miami. However, if you really want to see some stunning beaches that will make Florida's look like a lost neglected relative than google Bora Bora and see what a beach should look like.
You are in a wrong company if you have never met anybody who enjoys Harper's Magazine. However, you are right when you claim that you have never met anybody who reads National ENquirer, because, there is nothing worth reading in it.
As for weekend trips to NYC, there is so much going on M-F that coming here only for the weekends is missing half the fun.
As for the $40 meals - I was just providing the figure as an example. Whether it is 40 or 400, to a typical Vietnamese peasant, it is a fortune one way or another.
Thank you for pointing out that in Vietnam people use wood and ceramic for feeding purposes. Again,I was trying to make a point. I am happy however, that the rest of the tale met with your approval and apparently was correct since you did not point out any errors. You know that part with flies, and all. :D :D :D :D
