The shooting in Newtown, Conn., that killed six adults and 20 children on Friday has once again refocused the nation’s attention on guns and gun control. Below are numbers to give some sense of the size and scope of the gun industry in America, the federal government’s involvement in regulating that industry, and the political and economic factors that are likely to drive the debate in the weeks and months ahead.

The Gun Economy
47% Percentage of Americans who say they have a gun in their home or elsewhere on their property, according to Gallup, the highest reported number in two decades

$6 billion Estimated revenue generated by the gun and ammunition industry in the U.S., according to an analysis by business research firm Hoovers

310 million Estimated number of firearms in the U.S., according to the federal government, which includes 114 million handguns, 110 million rifles, and 86 million shotguns

209,750 Number of jobs related to the firearm industry in 2012, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which estimates that $9.8 billion in annual wages are earned annually

$136 million Revenue for firearm manufacturer Smith & Wesson in the second quarter, which increased by 48% (from $92 million) from the previous quarter; profits at Smith & Wesson have risen by 140% since President Barack Obama’s election in 2008, according to Forbes, a trend that’s been widely interpreted as anticipation of possible gun control legislation from the White House.

Long-term prison costs

Keeping individuals charged with a gun-related crime costs the government and taxpayers more than $US5.2 billion annually.

Mental health care

Trauma from gun injuries and homicides account for $US410 million annually in direct mental-health costs, according to Mother Jones.

Long-term medical and disability expenses

The kind of skilled nursing care needed for a victim who is paralysed or brain damaged can cost “upwards of $US1.7 million.” If the victim is a Medicaid patient, taxpayers foot the bill.

Emergency services

A 5-mile ambulance ride for a single victim can cost upwards of $US800. Combined with the fees of inumerable other emergency services, each gun injury requiring hospitalisation costs about $US583,000.

Police investigations

“more than 150 officers from at least 13 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies responded. The investigation that lasted more than three months and culminated in a report nearly 1,000 pages long.” These lengthy investigations are largely paid for by taxpayers.

Security enhancements

Tightening security at schools (hiring security guards, paying for metal detectors, etc.) to prevent mass shootings has cost the federal government at least $US811 million since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

When anyone who wants a gun has one, then what ? It's not as if they wear out very quickly or will they gradually be replaced by bigger guns ? Grenade launchers and then to mortars ?
Paddock had the money to buy a 2nd hand tank. Think what damage he could have done with that.

Perhaps the government should lock up their guns for 3 to 5 years (to be kept in a public and extremely secure warehouse) before returning the guns to people to see whether guns are practically useful for them or not!

As you mentioned before, many of approved volunteers in each suburb/ building block should be allowed to keep st home and well trained. Reducing the ratio of owning guns per average citizen.

I see your points;l but CBS has lost so much market share+ Chicago has lost so many to gun shots with their strict gun laws + no gunshops in Chicago. Chicago has some good points with market trends; but CBS is so crooked + Chicago has so many gun deaths + strict gun laws.

At $229 billion, the toll from gun violence would have been $47 billion more than Apple’s 2014 worldwide revenue and $88 billion more than what the US government budgeted for education that year. Divvied up among every man, woman, and child in the United States, it would work out to more than $700 per person.

But even the $229 billion figure ultimately doesn’t capture what gun violence costs us. For starters, there are gaps in what we know about long-term medical and disability expenses specifically from gunshots. ......

I don't understand the suicide stats. Not claiming that they are wrong, but 20% of people attempting suicide with a gun can't kill themselves? Seems that 20+% don't really want to die. Of the 50% of suicides by gun, how many would have killed themselves some other way if guns were not available? How many would have simply gone to Belgium and sought legal euthanasia:

That's messed up in my opinion, but apparently parts of the world are warming up to the idea of physically healthy people killing themselves.

Would like to see how $6 million in total costs is calculated. Seems very high.
