Even up to and including the election of 1960, the old guard Democrat Party controlled the South and spewed racism---

 

It wasn't until the election of 1964 that the South began to change towards the Republican anti-racism party. You'll notice that this is also right around the time that Republicans dragged Democrats over the finish line on the Civil Rights Act. --Many Democrats voted against it.
