Do narcissists make good traders?

Discussion in 'Psychology' started by Trading Education Buyer, Dec 4, 2016.

  1. Are you a narcissist?.Narcissists don't make good traders ,because they are all talk and no trousers, or do they

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultra confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

    All mouth and no trousers

Someone who can talk a good game but cannot back himself up. Relies heavily on others who are his opposite (able, but a poor orator) to sort out any problems. One who makes idle threats.

The problem with anyone who is ultra-confident, be they a narcissist or not, is that the constant need to be right blinds them to the reality of the market. You adapt to the market, the market doesn't adapt to you.

  4. Never have a narcisstic trader in your trading room .Keep away from them. They are trouble

The narcissistic personality trait describes trading individuals that believe they are special, have a sense of entitlement, require excessive admiration, lack empathy, are interpersonally exploitive, and are arrogant and haughty. As defined by one of its most frequently used measures, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory:

    1. Exploitivenss/Entitlement: The belief that one is adept at manipulating people and is entitled to do so

    2. Leadership/Authority: The belief that one possesses an extraordinary ability to influence others and thus prefers positions of leadership and authority

    3. Superiority/Arrogance: The belief that one is just better than others and is a born leader

    4. Self-absorption/Self-admiration: An elevated sense of vanity and the belief that one is special.

Based on their findings, here are seven things you should expect to see from a narcissistic trader:

    1. Narcissists traders are likely to also be extraverted and agreeable, but unlikely to be open to experience, conscientious, and emotionally stable.

    2. Narcissists traders may be detrimental in team contexts that require cooperation and a positive climate. Because they are interpersonally abrasive and dismissive, narcissists don?t make good team players.

    3. Narcissists traders may breed competitiveness and distrust among other employees because of their grandiose sense of self-importance and belief that they are an extraordinary performer.

    4. Narcissists traders may be very problematic in any rating system where they are required to provide a self-rating. You can expect the narcissist?s self-rating to be even more inflated than the self-ratings of other employees.

    5. A narcissist trader that is forced to admit he or she has not performed well may disparage those who outperform him or her.

    6. A narcissist trader that receives an unfavorable evaluation can be expected to disparage the unfavorable evaluator and possible even become aggressive.

    7. A narcissist may be detrimental in jobs where a realistic conception of one?s talents and abilities are critical.

Avoid hiring a narcissist if possible.?narcissists and psychopaths they are all talk during trading .?

    Narcissists are winners.
Winners in business, winners in life.
You always talk about yachts.... but where's your yacht?

  8. Good post

Even the best teachers are likely narcissists. Think Tony Robbins doesn't have narcisist tendencies?

Only losers point this stuff out, the bottom feeders who have given up.

Wall Street is full of these "winners". I have worked with a few enough to assemble the following set of observations:

-- These are the people that are very good at privatizing gains and socializing the losses.
-- As a general rule, they don't really have viable alpha because they have problems admitting to being wrong and thus don't want to tweak things or listen to ideas of other people.
-- Narcissists are very hard workers taking pride in their work and praise that it gathers.
-- If you have a boss that fits that description, run away as fast as you can
-- If you have an employee that fits that profile, you can manipulate them to work for less money (titles, praise go a long way with them)
-- you want to avoid giving them control over risk because they care more about being right then about making money

In short, you will not find many narcissistic portfolio managers but you will find plenty senior managing directors with these tendencies.
