DirecTV to Drop One America News in Blow to Conservative Channel

  1. This is why FB has so many people getting the law wrong and claiming some fantasy freedom of speech....90% of the U.S. population has no understanding of the law.

"Congress shall make no law . . . . abridging the freedom of speech"

Constitution does not say you have the right to free speech.... just says Congress (and extended to the State) shall not pass laws that abridge the freedom of speech. We all know this was interpreted by the SC to then mean without good cause or due process. Even in this scenerio it is not absolute.

But NO WHERE does it say you have some guaranteed right to free speech.

Sick and tired watching asshats online claiming 1st amendment rights when most of them cannot even cite the 1st amendment.

In fairness GWB flip flops on what he considers "cancel culture" and railed against us who were making the identical argument he is now making.

I have carefully defined Cancel Culture many times. You just seem incapable of understanding the definition.

Pushing someone to be fired, protesting outside their home, raising an internet mob to abuse them, and threatening them for their speech is pretty much cancel culture. If their speech or actions was against the written standards of the corporation that employs them (e.g. sexual harassment) then you would have a case that it is legitimate corporate action to dismiss them rather than Cancel Culture. Likewise dropping a show based on business revenue situations is very different than dropping a show because an online mob has been sending threats to the network executives demanding the show be cancelled or urging boycotts, etc.

In regards to NBC New starting a campaign to defund advertising at your competitors actually a step beyond cancel culture -- it is actually commercial sabotage.

And you have proof OANN violated terms of comps dropping them and said providers not just giving in to public pressure and potential revenue loss right? Neither of the quoted said anything about mobs outside their homes or abuse or threats.

Indeed, we got the notice on our Verizon FIOS that they are dropping OAN effective July 31st. And because they are a part of the same company, we're also losing AWE, which was basically a silly channel showing people buying large yachts and mansions and jets. Good riddance.

For Verizon this is a business decision about removing channels with low viewership (or groups of related channels with low viewership). There are more profitable things they can do with the bandwidth.

Let's carefully once again read the statement from Verizon.

"Our negotiation with OAN has been a typical, business as usual carriage negotiation like those that routinely happen between content distributors and content providers. These negotiations were focused on economics, as they always are, but OAN failed to agree to fair terms."

This was a pure business decision. Additionally it should be noted there was no organized public campaign to cancel the channel on Verizon

It is interesting to note that OAN on-air started to disparage Verizon many weeks before the dropping of the Herring Networks channels was publicly announced. Obviously they were trying to pressure Verizon in the financial negotiations but in the end it is OAN (Herring Networks) which failed to agree to a financial deal causing the network to be dropped on Verizon.

Now the OAN CEO is trying to blame the dropping of the network on a mysterious “somebody”. Maybe the CEO should take a look at why his failed leadership led to such low viewership.

This helps your case absolutely fuck all. "OAN failed to agree to fair terms" could mean a litany of things including content, so your "failed to agree to financial deal" statement is throwing shit at the wall and seeing if it sticks. "there was no organized campaign to cancel OAN" means what exactly? You think people blowing up their phone lines is different than people picketing outside establishments for some reason?

Listen, OAN being gone is good riddance, just don't tell me this is "different" and a publisher dropping Dr. Seuss books is "cancel culture"
