Believe it or not, I had this happen with a laptop. It had 4 USB ports, and the one on the back left was the culprit. Every time I forgot about it and tried to plug something in, bam it rebooted. I finally had to put a piece of black electrical tape over it to keep me from doing it.
I tried the camera in my wife's laptop and it works fine. I tried calling HP to see if they can help, but since the 1 year warranty has expired for my pc, they charge $60 for tech support to try to help resolve the issue. They won't charge you if they can't fix it.
Vinny1 What screen or message are you getting? Try pluging in the card reader with no media card in it. Several card readers require specific drivers. It almost sounds like your computer is trying to load drivers. Check your device manager and your usb controllers. NUTSNEAL
