How could anyone have a yes-or-no answer to such a question? People can only have opinions on that subject, especially when your definition of "pattern" is so broad. In that case, it must be a yes - there probably are.
The definition of pattern has to be broad because it means different things to different people. I only wanted one specific person's opinion here within his own context and not a supposed "statement of fact," which no one here can give anyway. As to how can he answer yes or no: Do you think there remain exploitable patterns for retail traders? 1. Yes 2. No See how that works?
I see. I think if he recommended you do quant testing, that this implies he thinks there is a possibility of an answer "yes". I doubt he was sarcastic and trying to make you waste your time. If we further narrow that assumption down, considering he stated the existance of a possibility, i think his answer then becomes a "yes". Pretty simple. Does it pay off to look for them, to me it sounds like his opinion is a "no". After that, you get into the difficulty of defining a "retail trader". Can he afford to do the testing required to find patterns? Is he a quant himself? Would he hire others and invest money or just his own time? etc.
I don't need to do such testing because I have already determined the answer for my own purposes. I simply wanted a yes or no answer to know specifically and explicitly, rather than merely implicitly, what Mr. Altucher believes. I didn't think this exchange would have required a dentist (i.e., pulling teeth) to get a simple and straightforward answer to a simple and straightforward question.
Several issues: A) along the way you asked me about ten other questions. I can't keep answering your questions. Then it becomes a lesson. I don't give lessons. B) If you developed software, as I did when i was trading, and figured out the answer to your question it would benefit you more than me saying "yes" or "no" C) why do you even care so much about my answer? this is why you have posted 1200 times in 2 months and switched your entire identity twice here. You know what I think then: the real answer to your troubles lies within D) and finally, I'll repeat: you have asked me over a dozen questions when I look back and I've been polite by responding to them. Now you need to just relax, take a deep breath and start coming up with your own answers.
From 10 to over dozen in a single post. Are you sure it wasn't thousands? Or perhaps only about 4 or 5, each getting to a single question, which you refuse to answer with a simple yes or no. Because you made a bold and sweeping statement, which was the only part I had originally quoted in my first post to you, and I wanted you to put a finer point on it. You have yet to do so. And this from a journalist. To think that I defended your opinion earlier in this thread against those who expressed outrage, not because I agreed with the substance of it, but because it was your opinion to have. And all I wanted in what was to be my last post to you was a yes or no "elaboration." Wouldn't a simple yes or no have saved both of us some time? (Oh, was that another question? [Was that yet another one?])
Brass - I think Vishnu could have answered your yes or no answer that you specifically wrote in Blue. Having said above, you should understand it doesn't matter what Vishnu or anyone else 'thinks'. If Soros thinks no retailer can make money using TA, and if you have a consistently profitable track record for more than 10 yrs primarily using TA, to heck with Soros's thought. He is obviously and demonstrably wrong. As a good trader, you should be concerned about your PnL and should not care at all about others opinions. By the way, I don't agree with everything that Vishnu says, but Vishnu has a very very good point about time spent on internet forums and doing your own research. Read this thread: http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=173620 Cheers.
Yes, that was another one. And I'm not a journalist. but you'ev asked me a bunch of questions, let me just ask two: why have you felt the need to switch identities so many times here. and why do you feel the need to post 1200 times in 2 months? Very simple questions.
But this thread is not about Mr. Soros, and Mr. Soros is not here to discuss or defend his opinion anyway. I was not even asking our Mr. Altucher to defend his view, but merely to put a finer point on it. I just wanted to take our exchange to its full conclusion. I do not depend on anyone's answers. I was merely curious about Mr. Altucher's personal opinion since this thread is about Mr. Altucher's personal opinion. This is the stuff of which conversations are made. Where did I ask for a lesson? Could I possibly have been any clearer?
I would give my opinion as a neutral 3rd party. In my opinion, what has happened here is that Vishnu wrote a few generalizations on this website without putting in sufficient qualifiers. Now because of your persistent questioning, he is feeling that probably you are trying to put him into a corner. I guess at this stage from the 'tone' of messages 'it sounds like' - one guy is trying to prove other wrong or to put him into corner. Even though the intention might be very noble. Thats all.
