The US had no public education until the late 1800's. Our literacy rate was incredibly high and the school books had Bible morals in them, so the kids were learning morals all along the way and moral questions make a kid think too... One hundred years later we were graduating people that could not read their diploma.. why anybody trusts anything at all to the public sector is way beyond me...
