https://asrainvestigates.substack.com/p/apologies-for-maya-angelou-math-worksheet?s=r Funny enough though the worksheet was NOT authorized curriculum and a teacher included it in their class without any permission from the school or the district. The worksheet was NOT EVEN CREATED by anyone in the school district. We offer our most sincere apologies for any offense that this has caused, and want to assure our community that this content does not align with the beliefs or mission of the Lincoln County R-III School District. Unfortunately, the assignment originated from a website that allows teachers around the world to share educational resources. At this time, it has been removed from the course and steps are being taken to ensure that it is not used in the future. Even the creator of the worksheet said that this was made ten years ago for a specific class in High School and also found it to be inapprpriate for its use. So this was an individual teacher who did something that the school district agreed was inappropriate and had it removed. There was no need for some law signed by the governor because it was already AGAINST THE CURRICULUM. You know the way rightie say new gun laws are not needed because it is already illegal to have a gun in violation of current rules. Teacher fucked up, the parents responded and the school district was made aware and addressed it directly. ANotehr article said the district was going to make sure it would not happen ag ain. So NO ONE in the school district was OK with this and it was dealt with. System works just fine and no school system is trying to put CRT into the class room. A rogue teacher was dealt with. Just like with gun owners.
It said that in my post. I actually show a picture of the letter you're referring to. Doesn't change the fact that this stuff is out there and being used. Or do you think that this is the only example in all of the country that this occurred at?
So DeSantis' spokeswoman cannot even come up with an example of improper education material being used in Florida? SAD
Post the books being banned. Also, are you now in support of CRT after being so long against it? I'm only asking because you go where the wind blows, so I'm never quite sure what you stand for and what your talking points are. "It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students," DeSantis said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law."
Florida Rejects Publishers’ Attempts to Indoctrinate Students Tallahassee, Fla., April 15, 2022 – Today, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran approved Florida’s initial adoption list for mathematics instructional materials properly aligned to Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. The approved list followed a thorough review of submissions at the Department, which found 41 percent of the submitted textbooks were impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics – the most in Florida’s history. Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics. The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies. Despite rejecting 41 percent of materials submitted, every core mathematics course and grade is covered with at least one textbook. Overall, Florida is initially not including 54 of the 132 (41 percent) submitted textbooks on the state’s adopted list. The full breakdown is below: 78 of 132 total submitted textbooks are being included on the state’s adopted list. 28 (21 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT. 12 (9 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they do not properly align to B.E.S.T. Standards. 14 (11 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they do not properly align to B.E.S.T. Standards and incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT. Grades K-5: 71 percent of materials were rejected. Grades 6-8: 20 percent of materials were rejected. Grades 9-12: 35 percent of materials were rejected.
I actually posted my commentary on the Florida math book situation already. DeSantis is just seizing on the existing situation of Florida math books moving away from Common Core ---- to make a big political splash to associate something that has been underway for two years already with CRT --- and to drive his political career. This entire situation in Florida is nothing more than DeSantis playing up his future political ambitions.
Ok, so you agree with the action, but not that DeSantis is using it for political points? Did I state that correctly?
I think they should make public the books being banned and the material they specifically objected to. It is not like politicians ever stretch the truth for political gain... You would object if a Dem governor banned 71% of the books for k-5 without showing what materials they specifically objected to.. Simply saying sopmething is impermissible does not really equate with objective standards.
I agree with moving away from Common Core education for mathematics. Common Core is turning out students who can't even count your change at McDonald's. I have stated numerous times over the past years that Common Core has been a fiasco and school systems must move away from it. DeSantis merely took a movement that was underway already in Florida for over two years to move away from Common Core for math --- and twisted it to include CRT to drive his political narrative. Unless I personally review every single text book one-by-one (which i am not going to do) then I cannot really comment on the DeSantis administration claims that particular math text books include CRT. I will note that there is at least one example of a math text book in Florida that was rejected which includes Common Core but nothing CRT related upon a review. Even the press statement from the DeSantis administration attempts to stretch what is rejected to somehow include CRT for a rejection criteria by adding CRT to the end of sentences. For example -- "28 (21 percent) are not included on the adopted list because they incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including CRT." I expect that none of these rejected math text books include CRT whatsoever they only include Common Core strategies.
