The DeSantis administration is mad because a county refuses to hide the Omicron data. Florida has an issue with Miami-Dade sharing omicron data with the public? https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article256759582.html Omicron is now the dominant strain of COVID in Miami-Dade County. The highly transmissible variant is driving the surge in cases here. We know that because Miami-Dade County’s mayor announced it, giving all of us critical information as we assess the risk of getting together over the holidays. So why, then, was this the reaction of the Florida Department of Health? “It is unfortunate that the county has decided it is more important to share these data with the press rather than coordinating with the Florida Department of Health or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” said Weesam Khoury, director of communications for the health department. She continued by saying that the department “can only make determinations based on verifiable evidence” and added that, “It would benefit the state of Florida and the entire scientific community if these local officials uploaded their sequencing data into a transparent and verifiable data base.” Seriously? This is from the same department that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, has slow-rolled COVID data for almost two years, forced news organizations — including this one — to file lawsuits to get public information on the pandemic in Florida and, in early June, stopped publishing extensive daily data on infections and deaths by county, triggering yet another suit. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a Democrat, armed county residents with information they need, when they need it, to help them stay safe. It was the right thing to do, whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican. Too bad the state can’t stop wagging its finger long enough to see that.
Humm... from the article Meanwhile, multiple US states have seen 14 day infection rates soar. In Florida, cases are up 509 per cent, in Washington DC, they're up 541 per cent, and in Hawaii they've rocketed by 670 per cent. I think Joe’s doing a better job. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...st-average-diagnoses-rate-pandemic-began.html
Yep... however don't confuse 14 day with 10 day with 7 day. Florida is the winner of the 7 day largest increase over the past week. DeSantis' Florida is also the winner of the largest single-day increase in pandemic history. This is what happens when a state does not adopt even basic proper public health protocols in the face of a very infectious disease. Seems like you stepped into it again rather quickly. Take a look at that chart again, note the Y axis. Now try putting in Florida's data, noting Canada is almost double the population of Florida. Yes, you are well off the chart again. I've explained this to you before, and you still don't understand do you ? Perspective, dumb ass, 32K now in Florida only a day after you posted. "Militant COVID policy" ??? In Ontario we've been fully open for 6 months with only minor restrictions started the last two weeks. I understand this kind of rhetoric is all part of the Covid Denier playbook but come on now haven't you killed enough people yet with this shit ? Call it a day Ron and you have done excellent work maximizing the damage.
Huge increases in Florida. Nobody is surprised except Tsing Tao and others like him. The obstruction of health data by state government is criminally negligent imo ( yes, I understand under Florida law probably not ).
Every day recently in DeSantis' Florida it is the same headline repeated. Florida breaks another record for COVID-19 cases https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/587308-florida-breaks-another-record-for-covid-19-cases It is interesting to note the the DeSantis administration is also doing everything possible to stop the tracking of variants in Florida. First some background -- most states fund the sampling of Covid tests to determine the variant type as part of a surveillance effort. For example in North Carolina between 5% and 10% of the positive submitted Covid tests are sampled in private testing labs or state (university) labs to determine variant types. Funding is available to all states from the federal government to fund this Covid type surveillance. Florida refuses to fund or perform any surveillance of positive Covid tests to determine variant types. The DeSantis administration wastes the federal money on commercials that never mention vaccination and very expensive monoclonal anti-body treatments (which probably don't work for Omicron). The Covid type surveillance rate of positive tests for Florida is definitely under 1% -- and most likely under 0.1%. Most of the surveillance occurs by mere happenstance at private labs processing the tests. At these low levels the Covid type surveillance in Florida is nearly meaningless. Over the past few weeks several southern Florida counties facing the incoming tide of Omicron started funding their own county-level Covid type surveillance and publicly reporting the results of the variant testing. The DeSantis administration has done everything they possibly could to shut down these efforts by counties - threatening to defund them and trying legal angles to shutdown the the counties efforts. Including have the Florida Department of Health issue nasty statements about these counties. You would think that a state with a sane governor would applaud these efforts in the best interests of public health. Florida has an issue with Miami-Dade sharing omicron data with the public? Puh-leeze! https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/editorials/article256759582.html
New York state makes up almost 45% of new COVID-19 cases in US New York state appears to have about 45% of the nation's recorded new positive COVID-19 cases. New York state had 82,350 positive cases on Sunday, while the United States had 181,948 cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. This comes amid new data from Gov. Kathy Hochul that shows hospitalizations in New York state from COVID-19 have reached the highest levels since February. We have seen an uptick in cases all around us. This is a northeastern phenomenon right now," she said in a press conference.
Yeah, the "northeastern phenomenon" is called winter. If the nature of this virus isn't obvious to you by now then I'll just explain it like I would to a golden retriever. People go indoors in the winter. This virus has its best chance of transmission indoors with multiple people present. Areas of the country getting hit by winter are also going to see increased infection rates. Florida, which is oppressively hot and humid in the summer, sees much of its population heading outdoors in the winter. People I've met here join a gym in June and quit in October to head outside for running, cycling, surfing etc. So its totally the opposite of the northeast and you can see it in the infection rates. It has little to do with Covid policies, the biggest driving factor is TIME SPENT INDOORS WITH OTHERS.
