DeSantis for the win

  1. Cuomo and Deblaiso are probably responsible for most of the Covid spread and resulting deaths across the country. When Trump was trying to restrict travel they were telling people to ride the subways, go about your business, it's just a flu bug. They were only on board with the whole pandemic when the virus was politically weaponized in March. Weaponized not all that coincidently when it became apparent Biden was the nominee and a strategy was needed to boost the Biden campaign. The rest as they say is history. Bottom line, the democratic party owns the lions share of the Covid dead.

Tell us more about Cuomo being your hero and how - according to you - he did the right thing by putting COVID patients in with nursing home patients.

As states crack down on COVID, in surging Florida, it's silence from DeSantis
Florida has 863,619 coronavirus cases with 17,585 deaths; Palm Beach County has 56,907 cases with 1,643 deaths.
    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story...rida-gov-ron-desantis-remains-mum/6263443002/

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is an outlier among his fellow state leaders who in recent days have cracked down on bars, restaurants and other businesses in hopes of curbing the rapid spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Even as the number of new cases in Florida on Thursday swelled by another 5,607, DeSantis gave no indication he plans to follow the lead of his counterparts, including governors in other Republican strongholds.

While many governors used Veterans Day as an opportunity to remind their constituents that many have been asked to do more than wear a mask to help their nation, DeSantis put a video on his website thanking soldiers for their service.

The only news conference DeSantis has held in the past 15 days was on the morning after Election Day to laud Florida voters for handing its 29 electoral votes toPresident Donald Trump.

Since then, nearly 47,000 additional people in the state have been diagnosed with the highly contagious respiratory disease.

The state has averaged 5,089 new cases a day in November, far more than the 3,201 cases it tallied each day on average in October. Florida is now home to 863,619 confirmed cases, a 17.3% jump in the past 30 days.

Palm Beach County, like many counties in the state, has mirrored those trends. The county has averaged 378 new cases a day in November, compared with 197 in October and 153 in September.

At the current pace, it is likely to tally at least 11,600 cases by the end of the month. That is more than it has logged in any other month except July, when 19,124 people were diagnosed and more than 300 were reported dead.

Overall, 56,907 people in the county have been diagnosed since the pandemic began.

    Other states cracking down
Facing the same increases, governors in other states have reinstituted restrictions on businesses and reinforced the need for people to wear masks and abide by social distancing rules.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who this week capped indoor gatherings at 25 people and limited indoor dining to 50%, famously told his constituents: “Just wear the damn masks.”

While cases in Maryland, like the rest of the nation, have soared in recent weeks, it has had fewer new cases per capita over the past week than Florida, according to a coronavirus tracker operated by the Harvard Global Health Institute.

Over the past seven days, Maryland has averaged 21.1 cases for every 100,000 residents compared with Florida’s average of 23.7 per 100,000.

New York, which has averaged an increase of 16.5 cases for every 100,000 residents in the past week, also limited public gatherings and ordered all bars, restaurants and gyms to close at 10 p.m.

Other states that have reinstituted restrictions in recent days include California, Ohio, Wisconsin, Utah, Nevada, North Carolina, Iowa, Indiana and Illinois.

Even Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat who has steadfastly refused to issue a statewide mask mandate, has said she is considering it.

If she follows through, Florida would be one of only 15 states that doesn’t require people to wear masks.

DeSantis said he would never again order a lockdown
In addition to refusing to order people to wear masks, DeSantis also took the teeth out of local mask mandates, such as the one in Palm Beach County, by banning local officials from fining individuals for violating the rules.

Likewise, when he on Sept. 25 allowed bars, restaurants and other businesses to reopen and lifted capacity restrictions, he said he would never again order a lockdown and has prohibited local officials from instituting any restrictions.

He has said he doesn't believe restrictions on businesses slow the spread of the virus. Further, he said, people should have the ability to work and operate businesses.

Since DeSantis lifted the restrictions, all the key indicators for the virus have gotten worse.

The exception has been the number of people who have been reported dead from COVID-19. However, experts say, that could change.

On Thursday, 73 new fatalities were reported. That is one of highest number of deaths reported on a single day for the past two weeks.

An additional five people were reported dead in the county. That, too, is one of the highest numbers of daily deaths reported in recent weeks.

Still, both numbers pale compared with those reported in July when the virus was raging. Overall, 17,585 people in the state, including 1,643 in the county, have died since the pandemic began.

Health experts said they expect fatalities to increase because of the recent spike in the number of people hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19.

For the first time since early September, more than 3,000 people are now hospitalized statewide.

On Thursday, 3,062 people were hospitalized throughout the state, including 212 in the county. A month ago, 2,105 people in the state, including 113 in the county, were hospitalized.

In addition to more hospitalizations, both the state and county positivity rates have increased. On Thursday, 7.32% of those tested statewide learned they had the disease. In the county, 7.24% of the tests were positive.

Global health experts said the rate, which indicates the prevalence of the virus, must consistently remain below 5.0% before any meaningful steps can be taken to control the spread of the disease.

Over the past 14 days, the daily average for both the state and the county has been 6.9%.

DeSantis still slow to share White House coronavirus task force report as Florida positive cases climb
    https://www.orlandosentinel.com/cor...0201112-qe7pjwned5az3e6uss56ipqjh4-story.html

Gov. Ron DeSantis' office is still dragging its feet on sharing the weekly White House Coronavirus Task Force reports, while several other states post them online for the public to see.

The reports show state- and county-level case and positivity rates, levels of testing and death rates. It ranks the state and counties by color codes, from green to red, and more significantly, it provides early warnings and a list of recommendations to each state.

DeSantis' office has not explained why it’s holding up the weekly reports, which are produced by a committee chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. Nor has it said how DeSantis uses the reports, if at all.

The Orlando Sentinel first requested the weekly report on Oct. 16 and had to involve its attorneys to obtain the Oct. 11 report.

On Oct. 26, the newspaper requested reports for the weeks of Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. Again, attorneys helped push for the report and DeSantis' office shared the documents a week later.

On Nov. 4, the Sentinel requested the Nov. 1 report. As of Nov. 12, DeSantis' office had not released the report nor had it acknowledged follow-up emails sent by a reporter and an attorney for the newspaper.

The state’s reluctance to share the reports isn’t limited to the media. Officials at Orange and Seminole counties also said that they haven’t been able to obtain the reports from DeSantis' office.

Even though DeSantis' office hasn’t shared the two most-recent weekly reports for November, it’s still possible to glean from other state reports where Florida stands.

In addition to several states like Oklahoma, the Center for Public Integrity has been collecting the reports from around the country, amassing a collection that shows many states are sharing the reports.

Between Oct. 25 and Nov. 8, the most notable change for Florida is its ranking in COVID-19 death rate. The state moved down from red to orange zone, dropping by 25 spots from 13th in the nation to 38th.

The state remained in the red zone for the number of new cases per 100,000 people, holding on to the 31st rank among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

And it moved down a notch -- from 33 to 34 -- in the percentage of PCR tests that were positive, remaining in the yellow zone. PCR tests remain the gold standard of COVID-19 testing and unlike rapid antigen tests, their results can take a day or more.

What remains unknown is the task force’s recommendations and warnings for the state, as the number of new confirmed cases have climbed from a weekly average of 2,200 in early October to 5,200 on Nov. 11.

The recommendation section of the previous available reports put heavy emphasis on masks, increased testing and messages that discouraged the public and college students from attending large gatherings.

“Florida should immediately expand mitigation in the counties with rising cases and any increase in daily hospitalizations,” advised the Oct. 25 tass force report. “Mitigation efforts should continue to include mask wearing, physical distancing, hand hygiene, avoiding crowds in public and social gatherings in private, and ensuring flu immunizations.”

In Central Florida, the weekly average of new cases in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Lake counties has grown from 260 in early October to close to 600 now, according to a dashboard maintained by USF epidemiologist Dr. Jason Salemi.

Daily hospitalizations meanwhile have ticked up slightly statewide, while they’ve remained mostly flat with slight ups and downs in Central Florida.

Jennifer Lepard, chief administrative officer for Oklahoma State Department of Health, said in an email earlier this month that the department chose to share the reports publicly because they are “are an instrumental tool in helping educate the public on the number of cases and their impact, as well as the possible actions Oklahomans can take to protect themselves and others from further spread.”

Several hours after this story was published online, the state’s Office of Open Government sent an email saying that it has no updates on the Sentinel’s request.

“Our office receives many requests each week, we begin processing in the order received, and unfortunately, we will not be able to show you favorable treatment over other requesters and members of the press,” wrote an official at the office.

DeSantis has quite the support here in the state. I know, your liberal papers all hate him and call him DeathSantis. But the folks on the ground don't see it that way.

Now, if that translates nationally, who the hell knows. Probably not as the media whines a lot and gets a national view. DeSantis doesn't. But if he channels the ghost of Trump and Trump is the Kingmaker, and DeSantis is a lot better of a speaker than Trump...yeah.
