You might want to cross check the years the US went heavy on tariffs with the Great Depression. Most experts agree that the tariffs were a mistake a big catalyst to exasperating that Depression.
Source History of Tariffs in the United States: Wikipedia William McKinley [edit] President William McKinley stated the United States' stance under the Republican Party as: Under free trade the trader is the master and the producer the slave. Protection is but the law of nature, the law of self-preservation, of self-development, of securing the highest and best destiny of the race of man.[30] [It is said] that protection is immoral.... Why, if protection builds up and elevates 63,000,000 [the U.S. population] of people, the influence of those 63,000,000 of people elevates the rest of the world. We cannot take a step in the pathway of progress without benefiting mankind everywhere.[31] [Free trade] destroys the dignity and independence of American labor... It will take away from the people of this country who work for a living—and the majority of them live by the sweat of their faces—it will take from them heart and home and hope. It will be self-destruction.[32] He also categorically rejected the "cheaper is better" argument: They [free traders] say, 'Buy where you can buy the cheapest.' That is one of their maxims... Of course, that applies to labor as to everything else. Let me give you a maxim that is a thousand times better than that, and it is the protection maxim: 'Buy where you can pay the easiest.' And that spot of earth is where labor wins its highest rewards.[33] They say, if you had not the Protective Tariff things would be a little cheaper. Well, whether a thing is cheap or whether it is dear depends on what we can earn by our daily labor. Free trade cheapens the product by cheapening the producer. Protection cheapens the product by elevating the producer.[33] The protective tariff policy of the Republicans... has made the lives of the masses of our countrymen sweeter and brighter, and has entered the homes of America carrying comfort and cheer and courage. It gives a premium to human energy, and awakens the noblest aspiration in the breasts of men. Our own experience shows that it is the best for our citizenship and our civilization and that it opens up a higher and better destiny for our people.[34]
Look, the reality is I trade energy stocks and are probably far more aware of this area then you are. The US really can't increase their production in a meaningful manner any more without significantly higher costs. Canadian firms on the other hand have lower costs and have just spent years lowering or completely eliminating their debt. They can shutter production if they have to. Trump's take on energy is absurd.
LOL...LOL.. Is Alberta crying yet? I have friends there. I should call and see. I could loan them a paper towel MADE IN AMERICA. Or I could just give it to them? President Abraham Lincoln once said, "…when we buy manufactured goods abroad, we get the goods and the foreigner gets the money. When we buy the manufactured goods at home, we get both the goods and the money." He is arguably America's most popular president, and he was absolutely correct. Let's spend our dollars on American-made goods from American-owned companies to keep jobs, profits, and tax revenue in the USA. ...Roger Simmermaker
Just watch and see. We have more oil than the Saudis. And the technology. Don't forget we are a huge economic engine.
Why you import so much Oil from Canada then ? And why do we produce it at lower prices then you or the Saudis ? You seem to think the US govt will be a more effective operator then private companies in a free market economy. Perhaps you should let same govt tax you at a higher rate and use that 'better judgement and technology' with your money as well.
At the expence of the american consumer. We should note the price of goods today and then check in a year and see how you're doing. Especially the price of fuel as every thing gets transported.
Not at all how the world works. There are tons of materials you can't produce and tons more that you can't produce in a cost effective manner. The top IT firms may choose to locate in the US but in today's world that can change easily. The US is a big market but it's not big compared to the rest of the world. You like Trump seem to be leaning towards a heavy handed government that interferes heavily with free markets. Not at all how the US grew and attracted large business partners.
LOL - so the author makes the point that without France providing cannon, muskets, and gunpowder to resist the British, tariffs are needed to protect American suppliers. Well let's not get crazy and wait until after the war before we do that. We Americans are always looking to place the blame onto others. It's not the drug users fault, it's the Columbians or Mexicans. It's not the obese peoples fault, its the fast food restaurants and snack food producers fault. It's not the U.S. manufacturers fault with bloated management/golden parachutes/meet 4 times a year overpaid board members. It's gubmint regulations, greedy assembly line workers (especially unionized ones), tort lawyers, etc.
