When I talk about turning off the lights, I am talking about "wasted power". Using a heater or A/C unit when needed is not wasting power. Leaving the lights on in a room you are not using is "wasted power". Even bitcoin mining is not "wasted power", because the mining is performing a useful function for the purpose it is being used. Lights on in an empty room serves NO purpose.
it looks like many cities in Colorado and Utah turned off their street lights; it looked quite weird at night. it seems like the whole city experienced a blackout or street lights had a shade on. I thought it could be the mountain thing....
We finally put mini-splits in our 1910 farmhouse last year. The amount of savings in heat blew my mind. Don't get enough heat waves in pacific northwest to gauge cooling but June's venture into the low 100s here was barely a blip. Would be interesting to do an analysis of how much electricity would be saved if a substantial portion of people installed heat pumps.
