Well, OpenAI should have been well, OPEN SOURCE (or at least open to be used freely). It is in their name and I think mission statement. It is non-profit too.

I have just learnt today that Duckduckgo uses Bing search results, it just filters it. Same thing.

So they made more API calls than they were strictly allowed. They paid for multiple login api keys. Hardly a data breach. And they paid for the access.

OpenAI stole a lot of their training data anyway. They not paying the original creators/copy right holders any money.

The DeepSeek people obviously violated the ChatGPT license agreement by taking OpenAI data to train another AI system. That's pretty obvious.

i can tell you deepseek is not a copy of chat gpt cause it's better than chat gpt for coding accuracy. it can do things that no other ai i have used can do, just wish it had memory like gpt.

i think this is what happened, from the timeline perspective.

nyt had them working on this since 2019.

“Between 2019 and 2023, they wanted to have this side project so that their Ph.D.s felt like they had something to do and so DeepSeek originated from that,” Mr. Alexander said.

It's quite good for coding, though O1 is still the reference. However, it was built at a fraction of the cost OpenAI spent.

DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT are both advanced AI models but serve somewhat different purposes and excel in different areas, reflecting their respective designs and the priorities of their developers.

DeepSeek R1, developed by a Chinese AI startup, is known for its cost-effectiveness and efficiency, being available for much less than ChatGPT at $0.50 per month compared to ChatGPT's $20 per month subscription. DeepSeek R1 is open-source, allowing for greater customization and optimization by developers. It performs well in coding tasks and mathematical reasoning, making it particularly suitable for technical queries. However, it has limitations in handling politically sensitive topics due to censorship protocols, which may restrict its use in certain scenarios

ChatGPT, on the other hand, excels in natural language processing, making it ideal for conversational applications, storytelling, and providing up-to-date information on global events. Its conversational abilities are particularly praised, and it is regularly updated to maintain a broad knowledge base. ChatGPT's versatility allows it to handle a wide range of tasks, from customer support to creative writing

In terms of technical capabilities, DeepSeek R1 has shown impressive results in benchmarks, often surpassing competitors in specific areas like coding and mathematical tasks. It is particularly noted for its ability to present its reasoning process, providing a more transparent and human-like interaction experience

Ultimately, the choice between DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT depends on the specific needs of the user. If cost, technical tasks, and customization are priorities, DeepSeek R1 might be the better choice. For users needing strong conversational capabilities, creative content generation, and comprehensive knowledge updates, ChatGPT would likely be more appropriate
