Dealing with coworkers who has poor money management skills

  1. Here are some hard and fast rules about life in general:

    1) Everyone puts on a good show when they want to remove money from your hands.

    2) Once they have removed the money from your hands, then their attitude suddenly changes. The show is over.

    3) Once the money leaves your hand, 90% of the time you will NEVER see it again.

    Examples:

    - You interview for a job and put on a good show. You make promises to work hard and do your best. You are hired and when the first paycheck is placed in your hand, you then proceed to actually work 2 hours a day while filling the day with other non-work related things. Your employer never sees the money they invested in you ever again.

    - You have a roommate who puts on a good show about needing $100. You give him the money. He never pays it back.

    - President Obama puts on a good show about the need for healthcare reform. You buy into it. Your taxes get raised and the money leaves your hand. You never use healthcare and see a bunch of supposedly "handicapped" people and illegal aliens walking into a clinic and getting free medical care. You never see the money ever again. Meanwhile, Obama's attitude has changed.

I could go on and on with examples of how this manifests in different forms. The moral of the story is that a show will oftentimes be put on for you when another person wishes to take money from your hand. Once the money leaves your hand then attitudes change and the chances of the money actually returning to your hands become slim to none.

So do not give away your money...keep it in your hand. If it leaves your hand not only will you not get paid back but the attitudes will significantly change to your disadvantage...oftentimes relationships and friendships are oftentimes destroyed as a result of someone not paying loaned out money back...Throughout life, you will be tested many times in many odd and different ways. Keep the money in the bank, keep the money in your wallet. You will realize a loss if you fall for someone's "good show" and let it go. Most of the time, the money is usually not put to good use and wasted...

Pretty much it, in college I was asked for bus fare by someone I barely knew it wasn't even that much or anything so I went alright just this once. Paid me back then immediately asked me again for something else awhile later so I just said "No, I'm not a bank". It is actually rather despicable the way some people take advantage of you, I've gotten tired of the amount of times I've been manipulated and lied to over the years but at least they didn't go and try to take my money.

Friends who purely rely on you for money aren't friends at all and are just assholes in disguise looking to take advantage until they find another victim.

  4. I remember not carrying cash at work. I kept my money locked up in my car during the working day. Worked really well.

  8. Agreed, I learned that lesson the hard way my senior year of college loaned out 10K to a start-up thinking I was investing in a micro-mezzanine type bridge loan, and would be paid back with high interest once they got some 1st round VC or Angel financing.

He had a good idea, but the guy just graduated and left the country with my money.

I think you need a Terry Tate in your office. I could have used one back then.

I can see what he would say after a hard tackle... "You borrow the cash you pay back his ass whoa! baby"

    Quote from nutmeg:

Pour moi, $20 is a fair price to buy back an introduction.

If they don't pay it back, no harm no foul, saves me the trouble of ever having to deal with them or saying "Hello" for that matter.

If it costs you 20 bucks to get rid of the loser, you're over paying for the effort :)
