That s what happened to me yesterday....traded the Dow (and lost loads of money) which didn't do anything v say CL or NG.
I know the feeling, i only trade ES and ZB. Some day's it can be really difficult to wait for a good setup. I tried to trade instruments like CL, however it clearly didn't work for me Looks like i perform better in slower moving markets.
I don't think Vix moves more erratically... just more volatile, but there's nothing erratic about it.
