The guy hasnt been governor of California for over 40 years dude. I think its time to find a new boogey man.
Reagan was a great governor and great President. In the late 1960s, the baby boomers(aka the original snowflakes), offered a life heavy drug use and free love, there were many conservatives at the time who warned against such a lifestyle and they were mocked and ridiculed. It turns out the conservatives were right and a mass death count followed. The demise of the California public schools were a direct result. Stop trying to re-write history.
Yeah, LA and SF are the leftwing strong holds of CA. Take those two areas out of CA and the state would be Republican. Ironically, the two most leftwing areas of the state are the places that are the biggest messes.
I can't speak to S.F. because I have not been there in over a decade. But, I have watched on a fairly frequently basis what has happened in L.A. I have mixed feelings about it. I am happy millions and millions of people in L.A and the rest of Southern California have a better life and I think overall Mexican people are great people. But, I am immensely disappointed that their votes have enabled democrat politicians to turn our state with a very strong libertarian backbone into a bankrupt (if you look at what we owe over time) nanny state at times lacking in freedom. I have watched our roads and our schools and even places like our DMV go from very well run... to problematic because on a relative basis our money now goes to far less useful places too often.
while I don't agree with your conclusions, thank you for responding with some substance. It seems a stretch to me to claim the deterioration of California schools was a direct result of the "hippy culture" of the 1960s. I would think it has much more to do with deterioration of public schools everywhere when tracking was done away with -- a misapplication of Johnson's Great Society initiatives, in my opinion. You'll also recall that when Reagan was Governor school funding was especially hard hit. There are many substantive differences between the Conservative outlook and the Progressive. The most important of those difference, by far, is the ordering of priorities. When there are shortfalls in government revenue, this priority order is critical. The Conservatives seem to consider Highways and Roads on a more less equal footing with education*, whereas the Progressives generally place education above infrastructure in priority. If push comes to shove, they wouldn't fund other than emergency infrastructure items before adequately funding schools. Conservatives put low taxes, both property and low top marginal income tax rates, at the top of their priority list; Progressives have other items such as education and healthcare above low taxes in priority order. In part, because Progressives are willing to tax the wealthy at higher top marginal tax rates, they are able to fund healthcare, education and infrastructure, whereas Conservatives tend to be willing to squeeze some items in their priority order list to maintain low top marginal tax rates. Progressives seem more willing to pass legislation that may negatively impact profits, whereas Conservatives seem very unlikely to do this. Conservatives seem to believe that money is more important than social action in achieving happiness, whereas Progressive will put social action ahead of money in seeking happiness. Of course, both Conservatives and Progressives want to arrive at happiness, they just can't agree on how to get there. _________________ *Mississippi would be an extreme example, and thankfully an atypical one. Mississippi has beautiful, smooth, pothole-free interstate highways and poorly performing public schools, a few of which, mostly those built or added to after integration, resemble minimum security prisons and are appropriately called "attendance centers." Mississippi has a beautiful "Sports Hall of Fame" to which Mississippi tax payers proudly contributed 4.5 million. Mississippi also has lovely air conditioned, portico embellished highway welcome houses built to resemble plantation manner houses. Mississippi is among the most Conservative of States in its outlook and government. It has low taxes and an unusually high number of extremely wealthy citizens per capita. It is heavily subsidized by more progressive States in America.
You acting like the propaganda matters. Leftist have pie in the sky propaganda. Conservatives pitch the idea the govt sucks so lets shrink it and do better. The realty neither side implements what it is pitching. The people Progressives vote for implement population can opposition control and freedom elimination. The people Conservatives elected programs designed to give more control and profits to the Cronies. The cronies win both ways... but with the progressives we will lose the chance to ever reform without a revolution. We should all be working to make the govt responsive to the voters. If you choose a progressive agenda than let it be implement properly. That you could be cheerleader for the crap we get from Democrats is the issue. Smart people should realize they are being duped by their own team.
Yup... I will be in LA this week, and driving up to Silicon Valley next... will survey the damage... Go Rams!
