if you're routinely doing blocks like that you can get much lower commissions. plus - and Nihabi alluded to this - there's more to it than just commissions. how good are the prices you're presented with? are the up-to-date enough to actually hit? monthly/use fees?etc etc etc.

the brokerage biz is extremely competitive, call a few places and see what they're willing to do for you.

nice ramp! this keeps going i'll have to short. :)

  2. Okay, I got out of the mistake trade at break even, just covering the commissions. I could have had the profit if I'd waited but I was starting to feel worried.

I also sold that batch of the penny stock at 1.90. If there's a buyout at $10 I'll try not to feel bad about not having all my shares. lol

DS: your system works. Congrats and thanks!

    nicely put.

when i first looked up from the comfort zone i was in at Fidelity (yeah i know, lol) i was shocked - horrified! - to see how bad my fills actually were. brokers are making their money somewhere, if commissions don't reflect the cost of trading then it is time to look very closely and see where it is they're making their money from.

    anybody see any news yet?

  4. Neither of my main brokers have extra fees, and the main one makes life very simple and cheap (free) to add money or remove money. I can add money by computer and remove money by checks I can write. All of this is very convenient and they have the fees I mentioned, which work best for my usual, large, trades. Also, yes, the fills are good. The new broker I'll be opening will be good for the futures commissions and small stock trade commissions. Probably I wouldn't use them for stocks, though.

I should add that the main broker also charges me only 2.5% to 2.75% for margin.

Costs for me there are quite low. If I take a broker for those tiny AIM trades, and they charge me 8% margin or I can't use margin, then it ends up being more expensive for me.

Should I short the DIA? Too late in the day for students?
