People think that religion is about studying God, but it is really about studying ourselves. One can look at religion as a sort of self administered psychotherapy for mankind. A prayer, a meditation, a song, they are all a way to find some psychic calm.
Since we cannot trust our teachers to keep their personal bias and politics out of the classroom religion cannot be taught to the little monsters. Anyone who thinks otherwise should be forced to watch a week straight of the 700 club while receiving an hourly enema.
that is a really good point. most the the right wing nutcases I have met in churches or other places were once spun out lefties or criminals. they swing from one extreme to the other.
" but I -- I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you, " "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.…"
Jesus was a moderate reformer - challenging religion conventions, a real leftist asking his followers should be like him - seeking truth, loving enemies, pursuing justice, helping needy, having critical/independent thinking, performing compassionate acts, etc. etc. Never give up, until death! How many leftists today actually follow him?
