I'll admit, I'm a little slow. 3 years ago, I had never heard of "blockchain"..... soooo.

Up until yesterday, I had never heard of CRISPR. I searched ET and a couple folks have mentioned it in the past.

WAY beyond me.... but word around the campfire is this is big ....and getting bigger. Supposedly it could change the face of bio-tech as we currently know it.
Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I've been reading about CRISPR for a while now. The technology is still far from perfect, but it is very promising.

It's a commonly-held view that someone will receive the Nobel in physiology or chemistry for CRISPR. It should have been awarded already; the Nobel committee is probably trying to avoid politicizing the ongoing dispute between Zhang's group and Doudna/Charpentier's group. And if we're lucky, said dispute will become an Aaron Sorkin screenplay in our lifetimes.

The idea of gene knockout isn't original - Capecchi et al probably made more revolutionary progress at the time which led them to the same prize in 2007, but the excitement with CRISPR is in large part because of how efficient it is and the commercial viability.

As for the size of the campfire, on the US front I think the big money has already made their moves behind either the Broad or Berkeley groups. Zhang is practically guaranteed to become a billionaire from this. The remaining play is how Chinese pharmas will attempt to replicate the efforts.
