Branson mayor’s ‘reckless idiocy’ helped turn Missouri into a COVID-19 superspreader hotspot
    https://www.rawstory.com/superspreader/

One superspreader tourist town — and its "reckless" anti-mask, anti-vaccine mayor — is being blamed for seeding Missouri's ongoing COVID crisis, according to the Daily Beast.

Wastewater samples first detected the highly contagious Delta variant in Branson — best known for it country-western music shows — on May 10. Since then, the variant has spread like wildfire across the state.

"I don't know that the Branson is what seeded the entire outbreak in Missouri," said Dr. Marc Johnson of the University of Missouri School of Medicine, who monitors the wastewater samples. "But I always suspected."

Branson currently has a COVID infection rate of 19.3 percent, and the number of daily new cases there is 10 times the national average. The local hospital's ICU unit is at 99 percent capacity, and experts say the current outbreak has not reached its peak.

But Mayor Larry Milton, who was elected in April, has continued to rail against masks and vaccines, and hosted a gathering of 27,000 for the Fourth of July.

Covid-denying Tennessee politician who voted no on expanding Medicaid says he's feeling better after 8 months in the Covid ward and getting a liver transplant, and he's ready to go back to work defending himself against all those accusations of child molestation.

After 8-month COVID-19 battle, GOP Rep. David Byrd gets out of hospital

The moment before Rep. David Byrd was put under, he realized it might be the last he'd ever see of this world.

From a COVID-19 intensive care bed at Saint Thomas Hospital in December, terror came over the Republican state legislator from Waynesboro at the thought.

He has no memory of the next 55 days, when Byrd's family knew they might begin planning a funeral as he remained on a ventilator and continued to become sicker.

At the time of his hospital stay, receiving antibody therapy wasn't an option for the 63-year-old.

For all but two weeks in April, Byrd spent eight months in hospitals and at a rehab center, a recovery period he describes as brutal and lonely, when his frame withered to bones and he couldn't walk, use his arms or do much for himself.

He missed the entire legislative session, which lasted from January to May and included numerous efforts by Tennessee Republicans to restrict the ability of government, and in some cases businesses, to enact public health precautions.

Months before, Byrd had joined Republican colleagues in voting for a resolution saying news media had "sensationalized the reporting on COVID-19 in the service of political agendas."

During his recovery this year, Byrd's liver began to fail, resulting in jaundice and a diagnosis of covid cholangiopathy, and ultimately the need for a liver transplant June 12.

After nearly dying, Byrd is back home, and he has a message: It's foolish to think COVID-19 will only wreak havoc on people believed to be high risk, a category in which Byrd did not previously place himself.

"I hope that by sharing my experience it helps others to act against an enemy that knows no skin color, economic status or political affiliation," Byrd said in a statement to The Tennessean on Friday.

Byrd was sworn in to the 112th General Assembly Friday morning, since he was unable to take the oath with his colleagues in January.

The rural, conservative former teacher and principal said he understands people who are hesitant to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

The shot wasn't available before Byrd was diagnosed with the virus the day before Thanksgiving — a day after he and fellow House Republicans, including some anti-maskers, gathered at the Capitol to elect new caucus leadership. Days before that meeting, the caucus also held a multi-night retreat.

"To them, I would say covid is real and it is very dangerous," Byrd said of vaccine skeptics. "It is a disease that wants to kill us. Please take it seriously. Please consider getting vaccinated. This is an issue that should not divide us."

Byrd declined a request for an interview. In response to a list of questions submitted by The Tennessean, he released a statement explaining the sickness and the treatments he experienced over the last eight months, and urging those around him to take steps to avoid being in the same position.

The experience deepened his clarity on the importance of family.

"I am not looking backward, but rather focusing on today," Byrd said.

Byrd's near-death experience and extended recovery from COVID-19 follows a tumultuous few years for him at the state Capitol, where he regularly faced protesters calling for his resignation in light of allegations by three women that he had sexually assaulted them as teenagers in the mid-1980s.

The women said the abuse took place when Byrd was their teacher and basketball coach at Wayne County High School.

He has not publicly denied the allegations. In a statement shortly after the women's stories came to light in 2018, Byrd questioned the motivation of his accusers and insisted he had done nothing wrong during his time in office.

Despite telling fellow House Republicans in August 2019 he would not seek reelection — and Gov. Bill Lee personally asking Byrd not to — he filed to run just before the deadline in April 2020, easily winning his District 71 seat again.

In his statement, Byrd said he is full of gratitude for the care he received at Wayne Medical Center, St. Thomas Hospital, Tennessee Select, West Tennessee Health Care, Vanderbilt Medical Center and Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital.

He was "spared by the grace of God and these gifted medical professionals," Byrd said.

"Life is a miraculous gift that I am humbled beyond all odds and explanation to receive a second chance at living," he said. "I am the first to admit, I am not deserving of God’s grace in receiving this miracle."

If you show up with fake CDC paper vaccination certificates --- just remember that border control authorities can validate the information in databases.

Canada fines two travelers nearly $20K over false Covid information
    https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/canada-fines-travelers-covid-documentation/index.html

Canada has fined two travelers arriving in Toronto from the United States nearly $20,000 each for non-compliance with entry requirements, according to the country's Public Health Agency.

The travelers provided false information related to proof of vaccination and pre-departure tests and did not comply with requirements related to on-arrival testing and staying at government-approved accommodation, the agency said in a news release.

The four fines added up to $19,720 for each traveler. The travelers arrived in Toronto the week of July 18, the agency said.

"All travellers arriving in Canada are obligated by Canadian law to respond truthfully to all questions," the news release said.

"Providing false information and/or documents to a Government of Canada official upon entry to Canada or making false statements or presenting fraudulent documents, such as vaccination credentials, is a serious offence and may result in fines and/or criminal charges," the release reads.

Penalties for submitting false information on vaccination status can go up to $750,000 or six months in prison, or both, the Public Health Agency said.

The government implemented some exceptions on July 5 for fully vaccinated travelers to enter Canada with eased quarantine and testing requirements, and on August 9 fully vaccinated Americans will be allowed into the country for non-essential travel if they comply with all government requirements.

Regardless of vaccination status, all travelers will still need a pre-entry molecular Covid-19 test, but after August 9, most vaccinated travelers will not be required to have a post-arrival test.

A mandatory three-night hotel stay will be eliminated for all travelers arriving by air on August 9, and fully vaccinated travelers will be exempt from quarantine.

On September 7, Canada plans to open to any fully vaccinated travelers who have been inoculated with a Canada-accepted vaccine and who meet all of the country's entry requirements.
