We have heard the COVID deniers endlessly stating that college students don't die of COVID. Then it became that only a few college students die because they have pre-existing conditions. Now we are seeing numerous cases of healthy college students die in the fall semester -- all who are perfectly healthy. So the CDC money has been used for Trump's Ad campaign and not a dime spent on tracking or tests. This is a disgrace. CDC Money for Covid Tracking, Tests Has Been Stalled for Months A Trump administration ad campaign is the only notable spending from the $1 billion in virus funding https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...id-tracking-tests-has-been-stalled-for-months The bulk of a $1 billion funding package intended to help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the U.S. has remained unspent since being authorized more than five months ago, according to people familiar with the matter. The funding, part of the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, also known as the PPP, was set aside by Congress on April 24 for “surveillance, epidemiology, laboratory capacity expansion, contact tracing,” improvements to data systems and boosting testing for Covid-19. Trump administration officials directed $200 million of the money to a $300 million ad campaign about the virus, according to a CDC spokesman. The ad campaign is being developed outside the agency. CDC Director Robert Redfield said last month the agency needs billions more to help distribute a vaccine. Other funds allocated to the agency have been steered to the White House’s “Operation Warp Speed” vaccine development program, which CDC is a part of. But most of the allocation has sat idle despite requests over the summer from CDC to access some of the money, according to one person familiar with the matter. Two of the people familiar with the issue confirmed the CDC didn’t have access to the money as recently as September. The people asked not to be identified discussing information that wasn’t public. A study released October 1 by Cornell University found that Trump was “the largest driver of the COVID-19 misinformation” in the world during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic. The study states that when individuals are misled by false assertions about the nature and treatment of Covid-19, they are less likely to follow the advice of medical experts and health officials and, consequently, contribute to the spread of the virus. Misinformation about the coronavirus is the biggest threat to public health, and according to researchers at Cornell University who analyzed over 38 million articles about the pandemic published in English-language media around the world, “the president of the United States was the single largest driver of misinformation around Covid,” in the world as mentions of Donald Trump “comprised 37.9% of the overall misinformation conversation.” View attachment 240612
On the state news front... looks like the Republican legislature and their court appointees desire for Michigan to become a COVID hellhole. Michigan Governor’s Covid Orders Tossed by State’s Top Court https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-court-invalidates-governor-s-covid-19-orders Dozens of Michigan executive orders issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to fight the coronavirus pandemic are unconstitutional, the state’s high court ruled Friday in a split decision. Four of the seven justices ruled that the 1945 statute giving Whitmer (D) unilateral power to issue orders addressing the pandemic violated the state constitution because the law delegated too much power to the governor’s office. The Michigan Supreme Court ruling invalidates orders ranging from business restrictions to mask mandates, and will require Whitmer to compromise with Republicans on any health emergency orders that extend 28 days. Whitmer’s powers may have been short-lived even without the ruling. Her pandemic orders have been a rancorous subject in a politically divided state. Republicans hold the majority in both state houses, and conservatives say the Democratic governor overextended her authority. Earlier Friday, a group of Michigan anti-Covid-19-shutdown activists submitted enough petitions to allow the Legislature to repeal the governor’s emergency powers. It’s not clear whether that effort will continue after Friday’s ruling. While legal challenges have been launched across the country in response to gubernatorial actions to the pandemic, it appears that Whitmer is the first governor to have her emergency executive authority eviscerated by a state supreme court. Four justices held that the state statute Whitmer relied on was an unconstitutional delegation of legislative authority because there weren’t sufficient limits on her powers, such as duration of an emergency, that “constrained the Governor’s actions in any meaningful manner.” Whitmer didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The case is In re Certified Questions from the U.S. Dist. Court, Western Dist. of Michigan, S. Div., Mich., Mich., No. 161492, Opinion 10/2/20.
Hopefully, the good governor's efforts were enough to buy her constituents time to understand the seriousness of the disease, prep the state for major outbreaks, and/or advance knowledge in treatment I do wonder if the feds support similar efforts in GOP ran states like Ohio, who had similar responses
