"Unvaccinated Caucasian adults with low vitamin D have higher mortality due to Sars CoV-2 pneumonia". The key word here is unvaccinated. Insufficient vitamin D linked to fourfold increase in risk of death among Covid-19 patients Irish researchers find unvaccinated patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to suffer severe disease and death https://www.irishtimes.com/health/2...ase-in-risk-of-death-among-covid-19-patients/ Covid-19 patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to suffer severe disease and death, according to a study by Irish scientists. Unvaccinated Caucasian adults with low vitamin D have higher mortality due to Sars CoV-2 pneumonia, according to the small-scale study by researchers at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown and Technological University Dublin. This is not explained by confounders such as age or obesity and is not closely linked to inflammation, they say. Having an insufficient level of vitamin D was associated with a greater than fourfold increased mortality risk, according to the study, published in the journal Nutrients. The study looked at the outcomes of 232 unvaccinated patients at Connolly hospital, all of whom had Covid-19 and required supplemental oxygen. Patients on steroid treatment were not recruited for the study in order, the authors say, to eliminate the effect their use might have on measures of both vitamin D and inflammation. The mortality rate among patients aged under 70 and who had “insufficient” vitamin D levels (less than 30 nanomoles per litre) was 11.8 per cent, compared to 2.2 per cent who had higher vitamin levels (greater than 30 nanomoles per litre). Among over-70s, the mortality rate for those with insufficient vitamin D levels was 55 per cent, compared to 25 per cent for those with high vitamin D levels. “Unvaccinated Caucasian adults with a low vitamin D state have higher mortality due to Sars CoV-2 pneumonia, which is not explained by confounders and is not closely linked with elevated serum CRP (C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation),” the authors state. The authors say their data adds to a growing body of literature that appears to support a causal link between low vitamin D status and Covid-19 disease severity and death. Although the research was conducted only on unvaccinated patients, they say vitamin D supplementation may play a vital role in protecting both unvaccinated patients and patients in whom the effect of vaccination wanes. Vitamin D is available from sunlight and in foods such as fish, eggs and fortified cereals. About half the Irish population is deficient in the vitamin. The Department of Health recommends people aged 65 and over take supplements containing vitamin D for bone health, but a 2021 review found insufficient evidence linking use of the vitamin to the prevention and treatment of Covid-19.
Now I have to admit this is amusing and a bit of overreach... Fish, crabs undergoing Covid PCR test? Watch viral video https://www.hindustantimes.com/worl...r-test-watch-viral-video-101660971188271.html Published on Aug 20, 2022 10:35 AM IST In a viral video posted on Twitter, Chinese officials can be seen inserting cotton buds in the mouths of fishes and swabbing the shell of crabs to take samples for Covid-19 tests. As Covid-19 infections are increasing in China, the country has found unique ways to grapple with the situation. Recently, a video went viral on social media where Chinese authorities could be seen increasing the scope of the PCR test beyond human beings. In a viral video posted by the Twitter handle of South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper, Chinese officials can be seen inserting cotton buds in the mouths of fishes and swabbing the shell of crabs to take samples for Covid-19 tests. The tests come after the local Chinese government announced in July that fishermen ought to take Covid-19 tests mandatorily for themselves and the seafood they catch, the South China Morning Post reported, quoting Jimei Maritime Pandemic Control Committee. The measures come against the fear that the illegal trade of animals could contribute to the worsening situation of the virus outbreak in the country. China reported 2,678 cases for Thursday, down from 3,424 a day earlier, the country's worst week of Covid-19 infections since mid-May, fueled by outbreaks in vacation hotspots in places such as Hainan and Tibet. The officials in Yunnan province also issued an advisory to tourists returning from Tibet to quarantine themselves. ‘A decision by officials in the southern Yunnan province to deny entry to travellers from Tibet over the weekend because of a lack of quarantine facilities created a four-mile traffic jam involving hundreds of cars, despite police urging residents to avoid the routes that had backed up,’ news agency Bloomberg reported.
I finished the 5 days of Pax on Monday & tested negative. Felt basically 100% until yesterday when i got mild tingling in my throat. It's aggravated now and making coughing a reflex. Congestion back tonight. Methinks rebound is afoot so may get tested if it gets worse; fairly mild like allergies except I've never had allergies. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/02/bid...-on-paxlovid-rebounds-eligibility-safety.html
Over a million Covid deaths in the U.S., nearly all of them unvaccinated, lead to the largest drop in life expectancy in a century. American Life Expectancy Falls at the Steepest Rate in a Century https://www.thedailybeast.com/american-life-expectancy-falls-at-the-steepest-rate-for-a-century The average life expectancy for Americans fell at the steepest rate in almost a century in 2020 and 2021, according to federal health researchers. In 2019, the average American would be expected to live until the age of 79. Now, after the ravages of the COVID pandemic, the average American is expected to die around three years earlier, aged 76. The greatest shortening of average life expectancy has been seen among Alaska Natives and Native Americans, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Those groups saw a decline of four years in their average life expectancy in 2020 alone. Rises in drug overdoses, accidental deaths, and certain disease contributed to the drop in life expectancy for the whole population alongside the toll from COVID. The drop represented the biggest decline in life expectancy since the beginning of the 1920s. Read it at New York Times
cough/congestion got slightly worse by Saturday, loss of smell/taste, improved by Sunday, cleared up significantly on Monday when I tested + again. Pretty much back to normal w/mild congestion & smell/taste still a bit wonky. I had some mild chest pain on the weekend and unusual "muscle" tremors around heart area that have since gone too.
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7133e1.htm "CDC’s COVID-19 prevention recommendations no longer differentiate based on a person’s vaccination status because breakthrough infections occur, though they are generally mild, and persons who have had COVID-19 but are not vaccinated have some degree of protection against severe illness from their previous infection."
What the fuck ??? Dude, I had Myocarditis twice as a youth when I was on the rowing team. What you just described is what I felt as a teenager. It came, went away, but it then came back again. Team doctors changed my diet for a month and no exercising for a month before I returned back to normal and back to competition. It became an issue again many many years later as an adult back in 2016 when I was on vacation in France. I thought it was just a bad cough that came, went away and then came back again until I woke up with that same health problem description plus a roaring fever. I then took a quick reading of my O2 levels with one of my rowing pulse oximeters...very bad as in around 85%. I took myself to the hospital and then fainted in the hospital lobby. Woke up almost two months later from a coma. I was told when I came out of a coma I had developed septic pneumonia, heart stopped twice and a few other issues. Please monitor your O2 levels, and blood pressure levels...when they suddenly drops...something is seriously wrong and you need to get to the hospital as soon as possible to prevent hypoxia. P.S. Call an ambulance instead of driving yourself to the hospital. wrbtrader
White House buys 100M at-home COVID-19 tests with ‘limited funding’ https://thehill.com/policy/healthca...-at-home-covid-19-tests-with-limited-funding/ The White House on Thursday said it had purchased 100 million rapid at-home COVID-19 tests with its “limited funding,” as the administration continues to call on Congress to pass more pandemic funds. The Biden administration said in a press release that the 100 million domestically manufactured tests would be directed into the Strategic National Stockpile. White House officials had no further comment on the tests when reached by The Hill. “While insufficient to adequately replenish our existing stockpile of at-home tests, this procurement will help meet some testing needs in the months ahead and will put us in a better position to manage a potential increase in testing demand this fall and winter,” the White House said in its release. It was announced in late August that the federal government would cease providing free at-home COVID-19 tests. At the time, the administration said this decision was made because “Congress hasn’t provided additional funding to replenish the nation’s stockpile of tests.” The White House has kept up its calls for Congress to pass more funding, having requested $22.4 billion to combat the coronavirus pandemic earlier this month. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said this week that there is currently an insufficient supply of COVID-19 tests in the national stockpile to handle another potential “omicron-like event.” “We had promised the American people we would make sure that we did not get into that, but we needed Congress to step up. Congress has not stepped up,” Becerra said. Health officials are hoping to avoid a major surge in cases this fall and winter with the rollout of the bivalent COVID-19 booster shots from Pfizer and Moderna. In order to fund vaccines and treatments for the upcoming seasons, the administration pulled funds from other areas of the pandemic response effort. The rate of new coronavirus cases both globally and in the U.S. has been steadily declining in recent weeks, though experts have warned that it is still too soon to pull back mitigation efforts. Apart from the ongoing monkeypox outbreak, officials have expressed concerns that the flu season this year may be more severe than usual, citing early data coming from the Southern Hemisphere. During a press briefing this week, Becerra encouraged people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as well as the flu at the same time. “I really believe this is why God gave us two arms, one for the flu shot and the other one for the COVID shot,” said Becerra.
Pain & tremors are long gone, taste & smell back. I had some lingering fatigue towards the end of it, like I'd want to sleep mid-day, something I haven't been able to do for decades now. Energy seems to be back now. It seemed like my short term memory was a bit fuzzy for a few days too but haven't done any memory exercises to see (maybe I'll do that today) if it's lingering. I'll be doing some speed rope to get my cardio back up.
