Yeah, many in North America live in a bubble in that they only follow local news or disregard global events. Something happens in Asia or Europe, 5 days later in US/Canada..."who thought this could happen???".
It probably does not apply to EliteTraders, but I saw a TV-Show once where they were asking young Americans about the outside world. Turned out there were quite a few who thought the USA was the only country in the world.
The current mortality rate is not accurate. There are way more infected than confirmed cases. Lots of people don't report any symptom at all. They pulled random people from cruises to test and some tested positive and was surprised. Same with athletes and actors like Idris alba who had no symptoms. Ofcourse the death rate will be high if you just compare it to the confirmed cases. There are way too many unconfirmed cases. This virus not more dangerous than regular flu strain, infact it might be weaker than regular flu as healthy ppl and children experience much milder (or none) symptoms than flu. Every one who dies are really old in near death with pre existing conditions. The death rate of flu among population over 70 and 80 is similar to this virus. Keep in mind that old people have high death rate even without this flu. To put into perspective here is the deaths (all deaths) among 65 or over population in usa in 2017 befoer this virus. Number of deaths of persons age 65 and over: 2,067,404 Deaths per 100,000 population: 65-74: 1,790.9 75-84: 4,472.6 85 and over: 13,573.6 As you can see, 1.79% of 65 to 74 year old ppl died in 2017. 4.47% 75 to 84 year olds. and whooping 13.57% when they are over 85. Leading causes of those deaths are complications from heart desease, cancer and respiratory illness. What they are doing now is they separated a strain or new strain of a respiratory virus and bombarding fear to manipulate peoples behaviour. This is pure stock market manipulation and political manipulation. You may ask why the government are doing all this crazy measures if its not that bad...well its to protect their ass. Once you convince the mass of something and if media bombards you makes you focus on very very very small % that are dying (would have probably died anyways even without the corona) the mass will act in a tribal manner. Those in charge who don't do anything will get full blame. Some will get blame (like trump) regardless of what happens. So all these lock downs and bans are just ripple effect. Same thing with sports. An idiot basketball player from Utah joked around and ended up being positive and nba shut down. Every other league shut down because they don't want their brand tarnished if someone accidentally died during the season. Big over reaction. China is loving it. Long term this is great for chinese economy in terms of manufacturing, production and trade. Don't be fooled by their economy looking bad now, they will recover much faster while the rest of the world is in recession. Hospitals are getting crowded because too many people are panicking and going with regular flu/cold. They get panic attack and think corona is causing them difficulty to breathe. There is also placebo effect, once you believe that you are going to sick, your body can mimick those symptoms based on whats planted in your mind via alll the crazyness you watched. You immune system will get weaker under stress. At the end of the day all this nonsense makes it worlse for those vulnerable people who are already in hospital because they get exposed even more. Just chill, avoid urge to buy stocks and start buying in late april/may when the earning reports are all released. we will all be fine.

I am in Russia. The situation is alarming. The situation in people heads, not in hospitals. I am not medicine expert and cant talk about virus. But I see total Censorship around, worse than in time of former Soviet Union. All the talking heads on tv and youtube, from extremely pro government to extreme opposition demonstrate panic about virus. Speaking rationally and tranquilly (do not confuse with ignorance) became marginal behavior. Looks like soon the lack of panic about virus will be criminal record.
