Corona 2020

  1. Okay, but there is more than one point to be taken from that article. The other point is that it is yet another example of Emperor Napoleon Fauci quickly relying on some bullshit study that was poorly done but assuring the non-science peasantry that he was the expert there. "This study lays that question to rest" he said. Ahh, no it did not. It turned out to be a total clown show where they assumed that the infected person was not symptomatic but then when they actually interviewed her later it turned out that she was. womp...womp..womp.

We have gone down that road with Fauci over and over right from the beginning when he assured Trump and others that covid would not be big problem because the Chinese had done studies and determined that the virus was not transmissable from human to human. Howd that study work out for ya Mr. Fauci?

He likes to work with the lefties to promote this idea that you have to rely on the experts and that you are anti-science if you question anything the experts say, when in fact good science requires that everyone question the experts continuously. He has lost some of his luster of late having pulled one too many sets of bogus numbers out of his arse and then revised them six times over. He has gotten a little too big for his britches for me. Although I have not seen much of him late. Not sure whether it is because I have not looked or if he has been sidelined a bit. Either one is good.

    Optionpro007 and traderob like this.

  2. Oh I agree about questioning science and experts when it relies on weak supporting data. There is this myth that if someone has a Ph.D and does a study it is word of God but as you can see from my discussions in the Health/Fitness forums, you can easily dive in to the study and see the details and realize the conclusions were such a stretch that someone must hav epulled a muscle.

What happens in today's society is the headline and first paragraph are read and people run out and treat it as fact/conclusion (saying in general not you specifically).

Then I dive down in the article and all the "But....." start jumping out.

Everything before the word "but" is bullshit

  3. 1 in 5 in Stockholm have virus antibodies: Sweden

Sweden, which has controversially taken a softer approach to the coronavirus pandemic, said Wednesday that more than one in five people in Stockholm were believed to have developed antibodies to the virus.

An ongoing study by the country's Public Health Agency showed that 7.3 percent of a sample of randomly selected people in Stockholm—Sweden's worst-hit region—had antibodies when they were tested in the last week of April.

"The figures reflect the situation in the epidemic earlier in April, since it takes a few weeks before the body's immune system develops antibodies," the health agency said in a statement.

Asked about the study during a press conference, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said he believed that to date "a little more than 20 percent" had probably contracted the virus in Stockholm—where over a third of Sweden's confirmed cases have been recorded.

A total of 1,104 tests were analysed.

In other parts of the country, the number of people who tested positive for antibodies was much lower, with 4.2 percent in the far south and 3.7 percent in the region around Gothenb

Amusing that he claimed they hit 20% back on April 22nd and the sampling tests only showed 7.3 percent at the time.

Now he suddenly is trying to magically claim 20% again... but the tests don't support his assertions.

At what point does everyone realize the Tegnell is full of the stuff that comes out the backside of bulls.

  5. Novavax starts clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine candidate

Novavax said on Monday it has started the Phase 1 clinical trial of a novel coronavirus vaccine candidate and has enrolled the trial’s first participants, with preliminary results slated for July.

The Maryland-based late-stage biotechnology company in April said it identified the candidate, NVX-CoV2373, with which it planned to use its Matrix-M adjuvant to enhance immune responses.

Adjuvants are mainly used to make vaccines induce a strong immune response, including through the greater production of antibodies, and provide longer-lasting protection against viral and bacterial infection.

Novavax said it expects preliminary immunogenicity and safety results from the trial in July.

The announcement comes as drugmakers pause clinical trials for other ailments and race to find an antidote for Covid-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus which has infected more than 5.3 million people worldwide and killed over 343,000.

Novavax said, upon successful completion of Phase 1, the Phase 2 portion of the trial will be conducted in several countries, including the United States.

The Phase 2 trial will assess immunity, safety and Covid-19......

  7. One issue that arises from this is in regard to antibody testing.

He covered the point that some of the antibodies generated by other corona viruses - such as from the common cold- might be potentially protective against covid and that this might explain why some people are not infected or have only a mild case.

Fine so far. But what about antibody testing then? Could some of the people who have covid useful antibodies- but antibodies that were generated by non-covid corona viruses- end out testing positive for having had covid based on antibodies that were - for example- in fact generated by a common cold infection? Such that it may appear that they have had covid based on antibodies that were actually generated in response to a different type of corona virus?

No doubt this is a watch-out that will need to be sorted out over time, especially since we currently have a plethora of antibody tests being introduced- some of which are highly sensitive and some which are garbage.

A couple months will sort some of this out.

  8. Agree. Antibody tests need to be specific.

  9. Australian Researcher Says COVID-19 Could Be Man-Made

A new study has endorsed the possibility of coronavirus being manufactured by humans.

In an interview with Sky News Australia last week, Professor Nikolai Petrovsky explained the results of his recently published paper. While using computer modeling, scientists found the virus to be uniquely adapted to humans.

“We found that the COVID-19 virus was particularly well-adapted to bind to human cells and that was far superior to its ability to bind to the cells of any other animal species, which is quite unusual because typically when a virus is well-adapted to an animal and then it by chance crosses to a human, typically, you would expect it to have lower-binding to human cells than to the original host animal,” Petrovsky explained. “We found the opposite so that was a big surprise.”

While most members of the global community have refuted the idea of COVID-19 being man-made, some public figures have questioned the conclusion. This includes Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President Trump.

When asked at an April press conference if he had seen anything to indicate the virus originated from a Wuhan lab, the president responded by saying:

“Yes, I have and I think that the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves because they’re like the public relations agency for China.”

Amid increasing criticism of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, its director is adamantly denying any leaks from the lab.

“We didn’t have any knowledge before that nor had we ever encountered, researched or kept the virus,” claimed Director Wang Yanyi. “In fact, like everyone else, we didn’t even know the virus existed. How could it have leaked from our lab when we never had it?”

Despite the seemingly worldwide consensus about the animal origins of the virus, Petrovsky maintains that the possibility of it being human-engineered, while not conclusive, cannot be ruled out either. He speculated fear of tighter lab regulations may be inspiring push-back from scientists.

“We desperately need to know where this virus came from and the reason for that is not political, it’s actually pragmatic,” he stated. “If this is a wild virus that came from an animal and we don’t know where it came from in the animal kingdom, then, you know, in a few years time we may be facing a very similar pandemic.”

Petrovsky’s groundbreaking findings came about through the development of a vaccine for which human trials are expected to begin within the next month.
