Cops have tough time finding sober driver for boy

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. – Indiana state police said that after a mother was arrested for drunken driving, the three relatives who came to pick up her 1-year-old son also had all been drinking. A state trooper stopped a minivan for speeding early Saturday on U.S. 30 in Schererville in northwestern Indiana. He arrested the 24-year-old woman on a drunken driving charges.

The boy's father arrived later to pick him up, but officers determined he was intoxicated and also arrested him on a drunken driving charge.

Police said the boy's grandparents then arrived. Both of them also had been drinking, state police said, but the grandmother who was driving was not over the legal limit, so officers escorted them home with the child.

  3. Given that Lake Conty Indiana went 70% for Obama it's a safer bet these folks were Democrats than not.....

  4. Ouch.

  5. You are right again. Redneck republicans are all teetotalers. LMAO@U Mr. P

  6. That's right down the street form me, literally. Pabst is right, Lake County put Obama over the top in Indiana, but Schererville is about 99% white. All that is irrelevant to the story. If you lived in N.W. IN. you'd be a drunk too. The place has went to hell.

Driving under the influence charges hit both the father and mother of a 1-year-old who was in the vehicle when his mother was arrested early Saturday morning.

At 12:45 a.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Fred Blohm stopped a 1996 Dodge mini van for speeding in the westbound 4000 block of U.S. 30. The driver of the van, Kelli M. Thompson, 24, of Crown Point was allegedly intoxicated and had her 1-year-old son in the vehicle with her, police said.

Thompson called for the child's father, Robert A. Dereamer, 23, of Merrillville, to pick the boy up and police discovered he, too, was allegedly intoxicated.

The child's grandparents, who had also been drinking according to police, arrived to take the child home. They were escorted home by the Schererville Police Department, according to state police.

Both Thompson and Dereamer were charged and taken to the Lake County Jail.

Thompson was charged with speeding, operating while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated endangering a child, police said.

Dereamer was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated and driving while suspended.
